Zoo Basel

Basel Zoo's own wedding page names an event team as the single point of contact: "date enquiries, room bookings and tours" all go through one phone number, +41 61 295 34 73, and one inbox, events@zoobasel.ch. A separate page on the same site describes those tours in far more detail, with a different phone number (+41 61 295 35 35) and a different inbox (guide@zoobasel.ch), belonging to the zoo's guide department, the team that also runs the standalone tour product members of the public book on their own. A couple never has to notice that seam, since the event team folds the tour into the same quote as the room. The seam is still a useful clue about what a wedding at Zoo Basel actually is: not a single purpose-built product, but a handful of ordinary zoo services, catering, a hall, a guided walk, that existed long before anyone packaged them for a wedding day.

This is Switzerland's oldest zoo. It opened in Basel on July 3, 1874, founded on the initiative of the Basel Ornithological Society, and recorded 62,000 visits in that first year, a figure the zoo's own history page and Wikipedia agree on, when the city of Basel had only 50,000 residents. Locals still call it the Zolli, a name Wikipedia dates to that same opening year. By the end of 2024, per Wikipedia's infobox, it held 11,393 animals across 602 species and drew 1,226,274 visitors, making it Switzerland's largest zoo by animal count as well as its oldest. It is also not run as an ordinary business: the zoo's own about page describes Zoologischer Garten Basel AG as a non-profit public company with around 1,250 shareholders holding 1,700 shares between them. No dividend is ever paid; buying in, the site says, is a gesture of civic sentiment rather than an investment.

The room count depends which language you read

The event page names what a couple can actually rent, but it names it differently depending on which language you read it in. The English version says: "The Zolli room, generously proportioned meeting room and 'Elephant View' restaurant are available for buffet lunches, drinks receptions or evening dinners. These spaces can accommodate up to 400 people." Read on its own, that sentence doesn't make clear whether "generously proportioned meeting room" names a second space or just re-describes the Zolli room. The German version resolves it: "der Zolli-Saal, die grosszügig gestalteten Sitzungszimmer sowie das Restaurant Elefantenblick", the Zolli hall, the generously designed meeting rooms, and the Restaurant Elefantenblick. Sitzungszimmer is plural in German. The original names 3 kinds of space, with the middle one covering several rooms, not one, and the English page quietly collapses that plural into "meeting room", singular. Both languages agree on the same combined ceiling of 400 people, but neither page breaks that number down by room, so there is no way from the site alone to know what the Zolli-Saal alone holds, as against the restaurant or any individual meeting room. The event page never mentions a registrar, a Zivilstandsamt, or a ceremony room of any kind: everything it describes is catering and space for a reception, not a place to exchange legally binding vows.

A restaurant that closes to the public at 3 p.m.

"Elephant View" is Basel Zoo's own English name for Restaurant Elefantenblick, its waiter-service restaurant, run day to day by a named host, Stefan Krebs, and reachable directly on +41 61 295 34 30 or restaurant@zoobasel.ch. Its own posted hours are daily, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a terrace open from April to October for direct views over the elephant and lemur enclosures. That is a lunch-only window. When the events page offers the same restaurant for an "evening dinner", it is offering hours the restaurant does not otherwise keep, which means a wedding dinner there runs as a private booking after the public kitchen has already closed for the day, not an extension of ordinary service.

The building carries some real history. Zoo Basel's own account dates its restaurant back to a timber-framed structure at the 1874 opening, replaced in 1935 to a design by the architect Heinrich Flügel, and renovated again over 15 months before reopening on 1 April 2015, when the site says it added "an event hall on the second floor" above the ground-floor dining room. The site never uses the name Zolli-Saal for that hall, so the connection to the wedding page's own wording is not stated outright, only implied by timing and by the fact that both sit in the same building. The same renovation gave the ground-floor restaurant its "panoramic window" over the elephants, a view that predates the current elephant enclosure: Tembea did not open until 2017, after almost 4 years of construction, at over 5,000 square metres, more than twice the size of the 1950s enclosure it replaced, and the year the zoo also switched to hands-off husbandry, so keepers no longer enter the enclosure alongside the animals.

A private hire, not the CHF 220 party

The events page lists a wedding beside a birthday party and a business event, all handled, it says, by the same rooms and the same team. That "birthday party" is not the zoo's dedicated children's product. A separate page, run through the guide department rather than the event team, sells a fixed-fee children's birthday package: a maximum of 10 children plus 2 accompanying adults, minimum age 6, available only on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings and afternoons, at CHF 220 without a snack or CHF 300 with one, bookable up to 6 months ahead, and with a house rule against opening presents on site so children stay focused on the visit. None of that touches the "birthday party" on the wedding page, which is an adult private hire, booked through events@zoobasel.ch exactly like the wedding itself.

The animal tour that can be added to either kind of event is described most fully on its own separate page: CHF 180 per hour and guide, plus admission (CHF 22 for an adult, dropping to CHF 17 per person for a group of 100 or more), for a group of 1 to 25 people per guide. There are 13 named topics to choose from, from a general zoo tour and Tembea's elephants to camouflage, animal senses, bionics and evolution, offered in English, French, German or Italian, with further subjects available on request. Groups of 20 or more can add an aperitif once the tour ends, hosted by the same guide inside a chosen animal house or in the cafeteria near the main entrance. Evening tours, which begin no earlier than 30 minutes before the zoo closes, carry a lower, separate admission fee (CHF 15 for an adult, CHF 10 for anyone from 6 to 19), and season tickets are not valid for them. None of that pricing sits on the wedding page itself; it lives one click away, under Tours, and the event team folds it into the same conversation as the room.

What the wedding page never publishes is a CHF figure of its own. Admission, the tour and the children's birthday package all carry public price lists elsewhere on the site; hiring the Zolli-Saal, the meeting rooms or the restaurant does not, so a couple has to ask the event team directly for a quote. The page also never says whether an evening private function needs guests to hold separate zoo admission, a rule the restaurant's own page states applies "to access the restaurant" during normal opening hours and says nothing about after the public gates close. A couple wanting the legally binding half of the day would need to arrange it elsewhere too, through Zivilstandsamt Basel-Stadt or wherever else they choose, since nothing on this page claims otherwise.

What the page does confirm outright is the part few competitors in this category can match: a reception inside the oldest zoo in the country, open every day of the year, catered by people who run the kitchen daily rather than for hire, with an elephant enclosure for a backdrop and a guided walk through 602 species as an option nobody else here offers. Anyone calling +41 61 295 34 73 should arrive with the questions the page itself leaves open: which of the 3 named spaces actually fits the guest count, what a private evening costs beyond the CHF 22 admission ticket, and whether the guest list needs zoo tickets on top of the room.
