Château de la Grande Riedera

Tap a star to rate

Château de la Grande Riedera is a historic manor at Chemin de la Riedera 10 in Essert, 1724 Le Mouret, in the canton of Fribourg, on the road between Fribourg and Bulle. It rents a large banquet hall in the attic of the manor for wedding apéritifs and dinners, along with two landscaped gardens, an inner courtyard and bed-and-breakfast rooms. Unusually, it publishes its rental price and its full furniture list.

The castle

The homepage describes the Grande Riedera as a prestigious place set in green surroundings that live to the rhythm of the seasons, and promises guests a trip into a forgotten past. It invites couples to celebrate a party, a wedding or a banquet in this historic setting with the line "Ce château sera vôtre, vous y serez comme chez vous" (this castle will be yours, you will be at home here). It then lists what the hirer can use: the rooms, the keep (donjon), the tree-lined gardens, the inner courtyard, the bread oven, the chapel and the romantic bedrooms.

For companies, the homepage offers several rooms and the full infrastructure for one or more days, and says that with various activities nearby the castle can also suggest activities and team-building ideas; the same offer could fill the free day of a wedding weekend. The site's menu also has pages for seminar rooms, accommodation (Hébergement/B&B), the castle itself, the region, other facilities, events, and an Association des Amis du Château, a friends' society.

The banquet hall

The wedding page is titled "Grande salle des fêtes et banquets traiteurs" and opens with "Offrez-vous la vie de château" (treat yourself to castle life). It lists the occasions it is meant for: a wedding apéritif or banquet, a christening, a birthday, a jubilee, a staff party and other events.

The hall sits in the attic of the manor and measures 150 m². The page says it works for apéritifs, banquets and concerts, and gives these capacities:

  • Banquet: about 100 people
  • Apéritif: about 150 to 200 people
  • Concert: 100 to 130 people

Included in the price are the kitchen on the second floor with dishwasher, fridge, oven and hob, a plate warmer, the inner courtyard, and this furniture:

  • 6 rectangular tables of 80 x 180 cm, seating 6 to 8
  • 10 round tables of 160 cm, seating 8 to 9
  • 2 round tables of 150 cm, seating 7 to 8
  • 100 padded chairs

The page lists 90 padded chairs under capacity and 100 among the included items, so it is worth confirming the chair count for a full banquet.

Price and timing

The rental price is Fr 3'000. Keys are handed over the day before from 15:00, and the premises must be returned by 11:00 the day after the event. In practice that gives a couple the afternoon before to set up and decorate, and the morning after to clear.

The gardens

The page describes two landscaped gardens, to the south and the north, with large old trees, lawn, ponds and a view over preserved countryside, available for apéritifs of up to 200 people. Three 3 x 3 m tents can be hired at Fr 35 each and one 3 x 6 m tent at Fr 50. Beer tables and 34 beer benches can be used free of charge. For a summer wedding, the obvious plan is an apéritif in the gardens and dinner upstairs in the hall.

Catering

The hall comes with a kitchen but no food. Under the banquet page, the site's menu links a separate page of "Traiteurs accrédités" (accredited caterers). The banquet page itself does not name them or say whether a caterer from outside that list is allowed, which is a question to settle before signing.

Staying overnight

The castle has bedrooms, which the homepage calls romantic, and a B&B section. Room bookings are by phone from 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday, or by email to bnb@riedera.ch. The pages do not give the number of rooms or their prices, so a couple should ask how many guests can sleep at the castle and plan the rest in Fribourg or Bulle.

Getting there

The homepage gives directions. By car from Fribourg, take the cantonal road toward Bulle via La Roche; about 1 km after the Le Mouret exit, turn left onto the Chemin de la Riedera near a large garage. From Bulle via La Roche, the castle is 4 km after leaving La Roche in the direction of Fribourg. By public transport, the Fribourg to Bulle bus via La Roche stops at "Riedera", 200 m from the castle. That bus stop is a real advantage for guests who arrive by train and have no car. The site does not describe parking.

Contact and language

Hall bookings go to info@riedera.ch or 079 520 54 69, the same number the site gives for the caretaker and technical service. The site is in French and German, with no English version, and it does not mention English. Couples from abroad should write in French, German or simple English and ask whether planning can be done in English.

What the site does not settle

The site does not say whether the chapel can be used for a ceremony, or whether any ceremony can take place on site; the wedding page speaks only of apéritifs and banquets. It gives no end time, no noise rules and no deposit or cancellation terms. It does not describe the other rooms, the keep or the bread oven in any detail, or say whether they are included in the hall rental.

Who it suits

The Grande Riedera suits a couple of up to about 100 dinner guests who want a historic house, clear pricing and the freedom to plan with an approved caterer. The gardens handle a larger apéritif, the attic hall the dinner, and the B&B rooms and bus stop help guests who come from further away. The caveats are the lack of a stated ceremony option, a French and German site, and details such as room numbers that only a call will settle.
