Goldsmiths and Ring Makers
A workshop goldsmith is a different proposition from a jewellery shop counter: the person who designs the ring is the same person who casts, files and polishes it, usually on the premises you visit for the first appointment. Several run a day-long course where the two of you make your own bands under supervision rather than simply choosing a design from a tray, which changes the price structure to a day's tuition plus materials rather than a finished-piece price. Because the ring is priced by the gold weight and the hours of work rather than a shop margin, ask for that breakdown before comparing two quotes. Repairs and resizes usually stay with the same goldsmith for the life of the ring.
