Château de Vaulruz

Tap a star to rate

Château de Vaulruz is a castle in the village of Vaulruz in the Gruyère, which its homepage places a few minutes from Bulle, the district capital. It is run by the Société coopérative du Château de Vaulruz and rented out for weddings, family parties, holiday camps and seminars. It is a self-catered, rent-the-building venue with a large banquet hall, a working kitchen, a sheltered courtyard and beds for guests, rather than a hotel or a serviced wedding venue.

From school to event house

The homepage explains that kindergarten and primary school classes and military camps long occupied the castle, and that today it hosts many weddings and festive events. It describes the site as "un lieu unique en Gruyère" (a unique place in the Gruyère), suited to parties, holiday camps and business seminars, with an unobstructed view of the Moléson, the emblematic mountain of the canton of Fribourg, and of the Fribourg pre-Alps from outside the castle. That past as a school shows in the offer: dormitories, a canteen-sized kitchen and practical rules rather than period salons.

The spaces

According to the homepage, the castle has a large inner courtyard sheltered from the wind, four double bedrooms, several dormitories, a kitchen, a large banquet hall (grande salle des fêtes) and a conference room.

  • The banquet hall comes with tables, chairs, a bar and a kitchen "pour l'organisation d'inoubliables moments de fêtes" (for organizing memorable celebrations). The rental rules describe the basic package as the banquet hall with toilets, 2 side rooms and the kitchen.
  • The conference room has a screen, a projector, WiFi, a flipchart and a coffee corner next door.
  • The vaulted cellars. The homepage says 2 vaulted cellars complete the spaces and can also be reserved; details come during a visit with the manager.

Optional extras in the rental rules are the dormitories (guests bring their own sleeping bag), guest rooms with bedding and a washbasin, the cellar (caveau) and the seminar room.

The kitchen is a real production kitchen. The rules list ovens, a steamer, a tilting kettle, a hob, a braising pan, a dishwasher and a cold room, all of which the renter must hand back clean. There is no house caterer: the couple brings a caterer or cooks with friends and family, and the site names no caterers.

Rental periods

The rental rules reserve weekends exclusively for family celebrations, birthdays, weddings and cultural and sports camps. There are 3 weekend slots:

  • Friday from 12:00 to Saturday 10:00
  • Friday from 15:00 to Sunday 17:00
  • Saturday from 12:00 to Sunday 17:00

On weekdays the seminar room is rented from 15:00 to 10:00 the next day. The longer weekend slots give a couple time to set up on Friday and hold a second-day brunch on Sunday.

The house rules

The rules are unusually detailed and worth reading before booking. Among them:

  • No incandescent decorations such as "lampes thaïes" (sky lanterns) or Finnish candles, and no fireworks or fires of any kind.
  • No mobile or fixed structures in the inner courtyard, so no marquee there.
  • No "disco" type events.
  • No music or noise in the courtyard from 22:00, out of respect for the neighbors. The rules speak of the courtyard only; music inside the hall is not addressed.
  • All decoration fixings (tape, pins, wires) must be removed.
  • The kitchen, hall, toilets, dormitories and courtyard must be left clean and tidy; the cooperative scrubs the hall floors itself, and dormitory cleaning can be ordered at the current rates. Missing or damaged items are billed, and the cooperative may report hidden damage within 48 hours.

The cooperative also reserves the right to cancel a booking at any time if the event turns out not to match what was declared, and parents must be present for the whole of a minor's birthday party.

Parking and access

Parking is outside the castle and at the municipal car park opposite the administrative building. Cars are not allowed in the courtyard, and parking on the rue du Château and rue des Molettes is forbidden; the rules warn that the police will be called because of the importance of the main road. The homepage says Vaulruz has a train stop, bus connections and a motorway exit. That makes it reachable without a car, but the site does not give journey times or say how far the castle is from the station.

Contact and language

The administration is on +41 77 522 40 77 and info@chateau-vaulruz.ch. Visits are by appointment with the technical manager on 078 699 40 62. The site is in French only and does not mention English, so a couple from abroad should write early in French or simple English.

Planning from abroad

The site's menu has separate pages for events, accommodation, the seminar room, a photo gallery and reservations, and the castle posts on Instagram. The gallery is the practical tool for a couple who cannot come to Vaulruz before booking, and the footer credits the site's photos to Dominique Savary. Because visits happen only by appointment with the technical manager, a couple living abroad should arrange one for a trip to Switzerland well before the wedding, or ask for a call instead. A self-catered weekend also needs a local helper, since the renter is responsible for handing back a clean kitchen, hall and dormitories on Sunday afternoon.

What the site does not settle

The rules say rooms are rented "selon liste des prix en vigueur" (according to the current price list), but the price list is not on the site, and the conditions page carries no text. The site gives the hall's furniture but no maximum guest number for a wedding, so ask how many the hall seats for dinner with a dance floor. The site does not describe a ceremony on site, civil or otherwise, and gives no deposit or cancellation terms for the renter.

Who it suits

Vaulruz suits a relaxed, hands-on wedding weekend: a couple and their families who want to bring their own caterer, sleep guests in dormitories and double rooms, and have the Moléson in the background. It fits a community-style celebration better than a formal one. The caveats are the strict decoration and noise rules, the lack of any service or catering, prices only on request, and a French-only site.
