Le Domaine Philanthropos

Le Domaine Philanthropos is a historic estate on the Bourguillon hill at the gates of Fribourg, rented out for weddings, baptisms, first communions and other family occasions. It sits 50 meters from the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Bourguillon, and the site pitches it as a place for a Catholic wedding in Fribourg: the sanctuary is, in the FAQ's words, "juste en face" (just opposite), across the street.
The estate is rented only outside the periods when the Institut Philanthropos uses it, and the home page is clear about what that means for a booking: when you come, you have the spaces to yourselves. The garden section adds that renters are the only ones on the site, with no other event running in parallel.
A castle, a boarding school, an institute
The estate's history page traces the buildings through several lives. It was first a private château from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, then a boarding school for girls founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Divine Providence. The buildings came in stages: the chapel in 1933, the Roseraie in 1952 and the Bel-Abri in 1975. Since 2003 the estate has housed the Institut Philanthropos, where young adults spend a year of Catholic community, intellectual and spiritual life.
That background explains the shape of the place. A former boarding school comes with refectories, a performance hall, a large kitchen and beds, and the rental offer is built around exactly those rooms.
The neighboring sanctuary has its own long history, which the site tells in some detail. The hill was a leper colony in the Middle Ages, where the sick were kept outside the city walls. In 1466 a new chapel was built there to house a statue of Notre-Dame said to be miraculous, and pilgrims came at once. In 1476, after the Battle of Morat, soldiers came to pray for their dead, and in 1523, at the height of the Reformation, the city decided to walk up to Bourguillon in procession every Friday, and the Virgin received the title of Guardian of the Faith. The site calls the sanctuary one of the oldest places of pilgrimage in Switzerland, describes its chapel as sober and luminous, mixing Gothic and Baroque, and says pilgrims, families and priests still come to pray, confess and celebrate mass.
The rooms and their capacities
The site lists 4 rooms, each with its own figures:
- Le grand réfectoire (the large refectory): 100 people standing or 75 seated. It is the largest seated room on the list.
- Le petit réfectoire (the small refectory): 50 standing or 30 seated.
- La salle de conférence: 80 standing or 60 seated.
- La salle de spectacle: up to 50 people seated on tiered benches, which the site suggests for speeches, entertainment, music or screenings.
The garden is the other big asset. The estate has 8 hectares of wooded grounds, entirely private for the couple and their guests. The FAQ confirms the garden can be rented on its own, without any room, for an outdoor event such as an apéritif or a family party. If it rains, the FAQ says the indoor rooms are spacious enough to move the event inside without losing the atmosphere or comfort.
Kitchen and accommodation
The estate rents a professional kitchen along with its rooms. The home page lists a complete stainless steel kitchen with 4 cooking plates, 2 steam ovens, a cold room, a large rotisserie, and a full professional set of knives, blender, slicer and stainless steel dishes. The site does not say who cooks. It lists the kitchen as part of the rental and describes no catering service of its own, so who prepares the wedding meal, and whether the estate has rules or suggestions for outside caterers, is a question for the team.
For overnight guests the estate offers more than 40 places to sleep: 30 places in single rooms and 12 places in shared rooms, which the site says can be arranged to suit the group. The FAQ confirms guests can book all or only part of the rooms. For a wedding with family flying in, being able to sleep a good part of the guest list on site, a short walk from the sanctuary, is the estate's most practical feature.
Wi-Fi is available in all the rooms, according to the FAQ. For parking, the home page names a Park and Ride car park 4 minutes on foot from the estate.
Published prices
The estate publishes its packages with starting prices:
- Pack "Essentiel", from CHF 400: the large refectory and the private garden.
- Pack "Entreprise", from CHF 700: the Essentiel plus the small refectory and the conference room, pitched at seminars and team days.
- Pack "Complet", from CHF 1300: every space, meaning the Entreprise plus the performance hall, the professional kitchen and the accommodation. The page sums it up as "Oui. Tout ça. Rien que pour vous." (Yes. All of it. Just for you.)
- Sur mesure, from CHF 100: a custom combination of just the spaces needed, with the team helping to build a clear, flexible formula.
These are starting prices for the space. The site does not say how long a rental lasts, what the price includes beyond the rooms named, or how accommodation is charged within a package.
Religious ceremonies
The site's FAQ says the estate can put couples in touch with priests available to celebrate a religious ceremony at the sanctuary or in the estate's own rooms. For Catholic couples, and families for whom a church blessing matters, that is the estate's clearest selling point. The site does not describe a civil ceremony.
What the site does not settle
The site is published only in French, and it does not say whether the team works in English. It does not publish a wedding menu, any caterer list, drinks arrangements, decoration rules, a closing time, a deposit or a cancellation policy. It also gives no directions by public transport beyond the Park and Ride. Contact is through a form on the site, by email at info@philanthropos.org or by phone on +41 (0)26 347 31 29, and the address is Chemin de la Fenettaz 1, 1722 Fribourg.
Who it suits
Le Domaine Philanthropos fits a couple who wants the whole place to themselves, a Catholic ceremony across the street, and room to put up family overnight, with a dinner for up to 75 seated in the large refectory. It is a good match for a wedding that stretches over a weekend, with guests sleeping on site. It suits less well a couple who wants a full-service venue with its own kitchen brigade, or anyone who needs dates when the institute is in session.
