A country castle that has hosted travelers for five centuries

Schloss Ueberstorf is a castle at Schlossstrasse 14 in Ueberstorf that runs as a hotel, a restaurant, a banquet and wedding venue and a small cultural center. Its home page calls it "un château à la campagne, pour couples romantiques avec leurs invités de mariage" (a castle in the countryside for romantic couples and their wedding guests), and the wedding section lists 7 spaces with their sizes and seat counts. The castle belongs to the Burkhalter Group.

The house leans on its age. The home page welcomes visitors to five centuries of history and offers a brochure on the 500-year-old castle, in German. It also tells a legend: years ago an anonymous hand scratched a small cross on one of the walls that had not yet been restored, supposedly a sign from travelers to other travelers that anyone who stopped at this house would find hospitality, openness and kindness toward strangers. The site describes the building in the welcoming yellow of sandstone, fresh green and elegant white, and sums up its own idea in three words: "savourer rencontrer rêver" (savor, meet, dream).

The wedding offer

The wedding page begins with a long list of the parties the team knows how to host, from "un mariage de rêve" and "un joyeux mariage civil" (a dream wedding, a cheerful civil wedding) to golden wedding anniversaries, baptisms, confirmations and engagement parties. For banquets, the castle is open every day, Monday to Sunday.

The page offers five documents for download: wedding and banquet documentation, banquet menu ideas, the wedding cake from the castle's partner restaurant (in German), the wine and drinks list (in German), and access information for guests. That last one is useful for an international guest list, since it can simply be forwarded.

For the available dates, the castle publishes a page of Saturdays still free in summer 2026, which saves a first email for couples who have their heart set on a summer Saturday.

The 7 spaces

The castle describes each room with its size and capacity:

  • Ancienne église (the former church): a very tall room of 72 m², with a colored stained-glass window and two windows looking onto the vineyards. It seats up to 70, or 120 when extra space on the ground floor is added. It is the largest room on the list.
  • Salle des lustres (the chandelier room): light and airy, on the ground floor, with a passage to the winter garden. At 38 m² it takes up to 32 people.
  • Salon blanc (the white salon): sober and elegant, 27 m², for up to 18 people, or 24 with the tables in small groups.
  • Salle de la cheminée (the fireplace room): the former knights' hall, reached by a spiral staircase. In winter the fire crackles in the fireplace. Up to 20 people sit around the large table for a candlelit dinner, or 38 guests at 5 tables in its 55 m².
  • Maisonnette: a green, largely glazed pavilion looking onto the garden, where up to 40 people can sit down to eat once the days turn mild.
  • Chapelle: the small chapel in the middle of the garden, gently renovated with a pink vault. Its 33 m² take 25 seated for an apéritif and 2 to 17 people for a meal.
  • Jardin: the garden itself, with white parasols in summer. The site notes that the festive table set in the garden became a cult scene after Fellini filmed it, and suggests an open-air buffet.

Read together, the rooms suit two kinds of wedding. A dinner for up to 120 in the former church, with the apéritif in the garden or chapel, is the larger version. A small wedding of under 20, around one table in the fireplace room or in the chapel, is the other, and the castle publishes rooms sized for exactly that.

Rooms for the night

The castle is also a hotel. Its gift vouchers mention a night in a romantic room with a four-poster bed, and the hotel section has its own booking page. The wedding page does not say how many rooms there are, whether they can be reserved for wedding guests, or at what rate, so couples who want their guests to sleep at the castle should ask early.

Booking, visits and language

Wedding inquiries go by email to info@schlossueberstorf.ch, with the preferred date, the expected number of guests and a phone number for questions. By phone, the castle is reachable on +41 (0)31 741 47 17 during opening hours, Wednesday to Saturday. Visits, planning meetings, tastings and on-site booking requests all need an appointment in advance, so that a member of staff and the rooms are free; the site says the team is glad to have enough time to show couples around the castle.

The site is published in French and German, and two of the five documents are in German only. It says nothing about English, so couples who need to plan in English should ask in their first email.

Awards and culture

The castle took second place in the category "les plus beaux lieux de mariage de Suisse" (the most beautiful wedding venues in Switzerland) at the Swiss Location Award 2019. It also runs a cultural program, courses and exhibitions, which gives the house a lived-in character beyond its event trade.

What the site leaves open

The site publishes no wedding prices, no room hire fees and no per-head menu prices on the page itself (the downloadable documents may hold more). It does not state an end time for parties, rules on music, or whether the castle is booked exclusively for a wedding. The access information is in a PDF rather than on the page, so there is no word on the page about trains or parking.

Who it suits

Schloss Ueberstorf suits couples who want a genuine old country house with character and a choice of rooms, whether for 17 or 120 guests, and a team that hosts banquets every day of the week. It suits less well a couple who needs a planner working in English, a large party of several hundred, or published prices before the first contact.
