Hagerbach, the VersuchsStollen Hagerbach test gallery at Polistrasse 1 in Flums Hochwiese, is a research and testing tunnel system inside a mountain that also runs a restaurant and hosts weddings in its caverns. It suits couples who want something genuinely unusual, a wedding party inside the rock with themed decoration if they like, and who value a venue that publishes how much a celebration actually costs.

A tunnel system that hosts weddings

The site's menu shows what the business does day to day: research, development and innovation, building material testing, a fire testing laboratory, nozzleman certification, heavy construction training, group activities and gastronomy. It belongs to the family-owned Amberg Group. The events side sits within that, under "Gastronomy & Event Location", with the Restaurant Hagerbach at its center.

The wedding page calls the venue "a hidden gem for weddings" and promises an experienced team that helps plan and carry out the day. The banquet page names the spaces for celebrations:

  • the Event-Cavern, for 40 to 200 people, which the site puts "at the top of the list of rooms where your event will be a complete success";
  • the large "Glück auf" cavern, for more than 200 and up to 500 people;
  • the Restaurant Hagerbach, for smaller groups of 20 to 40.

The rooms page speaks of 9 event rooms for 4 to 500 people in total, and the site cites a Swiss Location Award rating of 9.2 out of 10 points.

The ceremony and the apéro

The wedding FAQ answers the ceremony question directly: "Can a wedding ceremony be held in the gallery? Yes, very much so!" The tunnel system offers several places for it: spots in the rough rock of the mountain, in front of the data center for couples with an IT affinity, or in the Steigersaal, furnished for the occasion. Part of the gallery can be viewed in a virtual tour, and the team suggests an on-site visit to choose.

For the apéro, in the warmer months and in good weather it can be held in front of the tunnel portal or in the front part of the restaurant, or deep inside the mountain. The site recommends 2 to 3 canapés per person with the drinks, so that guests keep their appetite for dinner.

Food, drinks and decoration

For events in the Event-Cavern, menus are put together from the house banquet brochure, with served dishes, buffets or a mix, or an individual menu agreed in person. The kitchen cooks mainly with Swiss meat and regional, seasonal ingredients when available. Service, tablecloths, napkins, and tables and chairs set up to the couple's plan are included in the menu price. Drinks are charged on consumption, and couples can bring their own wine for a corkage fee of CHF 36 per bottle, which the site says is the same margin it applies to its own list.

For more than 200 guests, the site names Dine&Shine as its preferred caterer, but says couples are free to choose another professional caterer; with an outside caterer, Hagerbach charges for room rental, coordination, equipment and supervisory staff.

The wedding cake gets its own answer. The kitchen makes homemade cakes such as Black Forest, fruit quark or chocolate cake, and a cake from an outside pastry chef is served for a plate fee, kept in the cooler until needed. The site advises against fondant in August and September, when humidity softens it.

Decoration can be matched to the couple's colors with the spotlights and napkins, with projections on the rock walls, chair covers with bows for an extra charge, a rustic hay cart for gifts or a buffet, an old wooden sleigh for the seating plan, and 5-armed silver candlesticks at CHF 25 each. Since spring 2022 the technical side has been run with Winkler Livecom: microphones, projector and screen, sound, stage equipment, disco lights, a disco ball and a fog machine, and even live streaming for guests who cannot travel from abroad. Themed weddings are a specialty: the site lists underwater, fairy tale, boho, gothic, rainforest and space themes it has built, and invites ideas from Star Wars to heavy metal.

Hours, exclusivity and comfort

Parties can run until 4 am. From midnight, each extra hour costs a flat CHF 220. On the wedding day, the site says, the location is reserved entirely for the couple from the arrival of the guests to the end of the celebration, although a tour or another event may take place that morning or the night before.

The restaurant, the Event-Cavern and the seminar rooms are heated, so guests can dress up; elsewhere in the tunnels it is about 15 degrees and the floor can be uneven. On claustrophobia, the site notes that the Event-Cavern is only 70 meters from the tunnel portal. Children can use the "Alphüttli" next to the cavern as a playroom, with up to 5 toddler seats, and a seminar room can serve as a place for tired children to sleep. Smoking is allowed in the main gallery, and parking is free directly in front of the entrance.

A published budget

Unusually, the wedding page shows a sample budget for 80 guests without a ceremony: canapés at CHF 7.80 per person, a 3-course menu at CHF 93.50 per person, drinks estimated at about CHF 50 per person, chair covers at CHF 10.50 each, 10 candlesticks, 2 extra hours until 2 am, and room rental for the setup day at CHF 385, for a total of CHF 14'019. Room rental of the Event-Cavern, with its installed technology and cleaning, is included in the price of food and drinks.

What the site does not settle

The rooms page says the venue is reachable by public transport, but the wedding page names no station or bus, and the site mentions no hotel for guests. The wedding pages are in English, and the site notes that the "Feiern & Feste" brochure is in German only; the team's languages are not stated. Contact is by phone on +41 81 734 14 14.

Who it suits

Hagerbach suits couples who want a ceremony and a party inside a mountain, 40 to 200 guests in the Event-Cavern, a clear idea of cost before the first meeting, and freedom to dance until 4 am without neighbors. It suits less well a couple who wants mountain views, an outdoor ceremony, or rooms for guests on site.
