A winery venue in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley

Tobias Wein.Gut. is a family-owned winery and event venue in Berneck, in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley (Rheintal). The events page describes the estate as set among the vineyards in a small valley, surrounded by nature and yet only 10 minutes from the Au/Berneck motorway exit. The grapes grow on the sunny, steep slopes of the Rosenberg. The business was founded in 1866 by Tobias Schmid and is now run in the fifth generation by Christoph Schmid, who took it over in 2012 from his father Peter and runs it as owner, managing director and winemaker.

The winery's red wine range covers classic grape varieties such as Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir), Merlot and Zweigelt, bottled as single varieties or blends, along with the less familiar Dornfelder. There is a white as well, the tobias BLANC. A distillery belongs to the estate and makes spirits and liqueurs, which the team presents during tastings and cellar tours. For events, including weddings, the winery rents out its rooms, which the page describes as rustic but modern in design, and works with a set of regional caterers who know the property.

Event spaces and flexibility

The events page lists the spaces one by one, each with a capacity and a list of equipment, and every room includes daytime parking and final cleaning.

The whole estate can be booked for the largest events. It brings together the Winzersaal, the Torkel (the press house), the outdoor terrace, the Trauwiese (a meadow whose name translates as "wedding meadow"), the Rebberg-Galerie and, optionally, the Weinstube, for 30 to 150 people. The equipment listed for this option includes a projector and screen, a sound system with microphone, a stage, mood lighting, basic decoration and access to the balcony on request.

The Winzersaal takes 30 to 100 people and, according to the page, is especially suited to larger meals, banquets and conferences. It has a projector and screen, a sound system with microphone, a small stage, mood lighting and basic decoration. For a wedding this is the room for a seated dinner with speeches.

The Rebberg-Galerie sits raised above the Torkel with a view into the vineyards of the Rosenberg. It fits up to 50 people and has a projector with screen, a simple sound system with microphone, mood lighting, panoramic windows with a vineyard view, basic decoration and balcony access on request.

The Weinstube is described as cozy and rustic ("gemütlich und urchig"), tucked slightly out of sight behind the wine shop and full of charm. The page calls it ideal for club events and smaller groups of up to 50 people. It has a projector and screen, a simple sound system with microphone, a small bar and basic decoration.

Further spaces inside and outside can be rented on request and by arrangement: the terrace, the Trauwiese, a tasting room, the Torkel with its stage, and the "Rosenberg" balcony. The page asks couples to contact the winery directly for details on these. It also recommends a site visit to get a better picture of the property and discuss details, and offers a virtual tour online for a first look.

Catering, drinks and service

Tobias Wein.Gut. does not cook for events itself. The page explains that it rents out its rooms and works with several selected regional caterers, who know the estate's facilities and routines and offer a wide range of food for every kind of occasion. The winery says it is glad to advise on catering questions.

Drinks are a different matter. Because the winery wants to pour the wines it grows in the Rheintal and presses on the estate, it serves tobias wines exclusively at events, and it supplies the other drinks as well: mineral water, soft drinks, beer, spirits and coffee. The winery provides its own staff for the wine and drinks service, and the number of service staff is agreed with the couple in person. During the meal, the chosen caterer brings additional staff to plate and serve the menu or run the buffet.

Booking, prices and contact

The event areas open for guests by appointment, while the Vinothek (the wine shop) keeps regular hours: Tuesday to Friday 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 17:00, Saturday 09:00 to 13:00, closed Monday and Sunday. The events page has its own contact form, which asks for the type of event, the planned date, the approximate number of guests and whether the couple prefers to be contacted by phone or email. The same form lets couples request the event brochure, ask about prices or arrange a viewing. Prices are not published on the page itself; they come with the brochure or on request.

Contact details: Tobias Schmid & Sohn AG, Hinterburgstrasse 24, 9442 Berneck SG, telephone +41 (0)71 726 10 10. The sales manager named on the team page is Ralf P. Custer.

The site is in German and does not say whether event planning is available in English. Couples from abroad should ask about language when they first make contact.

The Rhine Valley setting and wine heritage

The winery's home page says viticulture in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley has an ancient tradition reaching back to Roman times, and that the vineyards are mentioned in Berneck's oldest document, from 892. Castles were built into the vineyards, among them the Schlössli am Rosenberg, which the Schmid family owns and which serves as the emblem of the estate and its wines. The winery likes to call its wines "handgemacht in Berneck" (handmade in Berneck), because much of the work on the steep slopes is done by hand.

The estate's news page lists recent awards: at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse 26, gold medals for the tobias BLANC 2025, the PINOT NOIR G3 2022, the PINOT NOIR G4 2020 and the ZWEIGELT 2022, and silver for three other wines. Further awards are listed from the Expovina Wine Trophy 26, the Mondial des Pinots 26 and the Mondial du Merlot 26. For a couple whose guests will be drinking only the house wine all evening, that track record is a useful reassurance, and a tasting before booking is the obvious way to try it.

Who it suits

Tobias Wein.Gut. suits wine-minded couples who want a vineyard setting and a room sized to the guest list, from a party of up to 50 in the Rebberg-Galerie or the Weinstube to 150 across the whole estate. Guests arriving by car have the motorway exit 10 minutes away, and daytime parking is included.

It is less suitable for couples who want a single all-inclusive package, since the food comes from a separate caterer booked through the winery's partners. The exclusive wine rule means no outside wine, and the page gives no information on public transport, accommodation or how late an evening party can run. Prices and language support both have to be asked for directly.
