GuardaVal Scuol

GuardaVal's own rooms page states the trade-off as plainly as a hotel ever admits one: to preserve the originality of the Engadin house, the lift installation was deliberately dispensed with during the restoration. Floors, the restaurant, the wellness area and the passage through to the neighbouring thermal bath are all reached by stairs, and the same page sends guests with walking difficulties to Belvedere or Belvair instead, the 2 sister hotels a few doors down the street that do have lifts, one of them with some rooms built barrier-free. That is a real limitation, printed by the operator itself rather than discovered by a guest on arrival, and it comes with a specific building behind it: 36 individually designed rooms inside a house that has stood on this spot since long before anyone thought to fit one with a lift.

From posthorse station to boutique hotel

The building opened in 1864 as Hotel Piz Campatsch, complete with its own posthorse station for carriage connections to Süs, today's Susch, and on to Nauders. Before 1900 a change of ownership renamed it Hotel Könz, and the same owner added a dependence directly across the street, on the plot that is now the Cha'Sura annex. Around 1945 another change of ownership gave the building the name it has kept since, Hotel Guardaval. Julia and Kurt Baumgartner, who by then already owned Hotel Belvedere and Badehotel Belvair a short walk up the same street, bought GuardaVal in 2008 or 2009, the third of their Scuol hotels, and restored it into the hotel it is today: 36 rooms, an Engadine gourmet restaurant, a fireplace bar and an in-house wellness area, run by a team of around 30. The operator's own listings page calls it "one of the most romantic hotels in the Lower Engadine," which is marketing language worth reading past, but the building underneath the line is real: the oldest of the resort's 3 hotels, standing on this street since 1864, before Hotel Belvedere or Badehotel Belvair existed at all.

Rooms inside the original walls

Guests who stay inside GuardaVal itself, rather than across the street in Cha'Sura, choose from what the hotel's own site calls "36 individually designed, romantic rooms," including junior suites sized from 26 square metres for 2 to 4 people, set inside the building's original walls rather than a modern extension. That is the trade a couple makes booking rooms here for a travelling wedding party: fewer beds than the group's larger hotels, reached by stairs rather than a lift, inside the same walls the wedding dinner is served in.

What a wedding party gets inside the old house

A wedding booked specifically at GuardaVal draws on rooms inside this single building, not the wider resort. The gourmet restaurant, the hotel's main dining room, seats up to 80 for a wedding dinner. For an aperitif beforehand, the operator offers the Döss hall, inside the part of the house called Chasa Döss and described on the wedding page as "a real bijou," holding 10 to 40 guests; the resort's own printed brochure adds a size the current website leaves out, 52 square metres. The Cheminée Bar, with its own terrace looking out over the village and the mountains, also holds up to 80, and doubles as an ordinary hotel bar on any evening a wedding is not happening. A 4th, smaller room, Stüva Lischana, is pitched at meetings and private parties rather than at a wedding directly, and here the hotel's own 2 documents genuinely disagree: the live website caps it at 28 people with no size given, while the 2022 brochure gives the same room, described in near-identical words, as 35 people across 44 square metres. Both figures are printed here because there is no 3rd source to settle which is current, and the brochure itself is marked "prices subject to change" as of September 2022, roughly 4 years old against the site it now contradicts.

Cha'Sura, across the street

Guests wanting more room than a single hotel bedroom stay in Cha'Sura, the modern annex directly opposite GuardaVal, built on the same plot Hotel Könz used for its own dependence before 1900. The operator's own copy places it "in the old upper village centre" rather than a purpose-built annex somewhere else in town, and its family suites, sleeping 2 to 4 each, run 56 and 38 square metres. The operator's own history page dates the current building to 2013, with an underground car park and a ski and bike room added underneath it. A guest staying there for the wedding weekend crosses the historic village street once, to reach the ceremony and the dinner inside GuardaVal itself; a guest who books a room inside the old house instead does not cross anything at all. One thing Cha'Sura does not have is the resort's hairdresser: Coiffeur Nova works out of Chasa Nova, a different annex, opposite Hotel Belvedere rather than GuardaVal, worth knowing before a couple assumes the salon named on the wedding pages sits next door rather than across the resort.

What GuardaVal sells on its own, then, is a small, coherent set of rooms inside 1 historic building: a gourmet restaurant that seats up to 80, an aperitif hall inside a 400-year-old house, a fireplace bar with a view over the village, and 1 smaller room the operator's own paperwork cannot quite agree on the size of. That is enough for a wedding party that fits comfortably under 80 guests and does not mind stairs to get to any of it. A couple who wants a bigger guest list, a lift, or rooms spread across more than 1 building is, by the operator's own admission on the same rooms page, better served by Belvedere or Belvair, GuardaVal's 2 sister hotels a short walk down the same street. That is not a criticism of the building itself. It is the specific, stated cost of keeping a 400-year-old house exactly as it was built, rather than retrofitting it for a wedding industry that did not exist when the posthorse station was still running carriages to Nauders.
