A castle in the town of Maienfeld
Schloss Maienfeld is a castle in Maienfeld, postcode CH-7304, in Graubünden. Its history page says the castle complex still stands as a landmark "von weither sichtbar" (visible from far away) in the historic small town. Today it holds several restaurant and event rooms, apartments, offices and a vineyard, and it is owned by the local Zindel family. The hospitality side is in the hands of 1Xanders GmbH, which the page describes as experts in varied culinary experiences.
The wedding page is short and romantic: "Im Schloss Maienfeld wird Ihr schönster Tag zur Märchenhochzeit" (at Schloss Maienfeld your most beautiful day becomes a fairy-tale wedding). It names the elegant historic rooms, the "verwunschene Garten" (enchanted garden) and the landscape around the castle as the backdrop, and promises: "Für Ihren schönsten Tag machen wir auch das Unmögliche möglich und erschaffen für Sie Ihre ganz exklusive Hochzeitswelt" (for your big day we make even the impossible possible and create your very own exclusive wedding world).
A long history
The history page is the richest part of the site. The massive tower, the oldest part of the complex, was built around the year 1247. About 100 years later the castle was extended into the «Alten Schloss» (Old Castle), which today houses the restaurant and the bistro. Opposite stands the Toggenburgerhaus, a palas named after Count Friedrich VII of Toggenburg, who built it. The Barons of Brandis then took over, and for 150 years the castle carried their name. At the start of the 16th century the castle and the lordship of Maienfeld passed to the Drei Bünde, the Three Leagues, who used it as the home and seat of various bailiffs.
From the 18th century the castle fell apart into separate buildings, and it was only rebuilt in its present form in the middle of the 20th century. The castle was named after the town from the start, spelled Meyenfeld, Mayenfeld or Maienfeld. Since 2020 it has carried its original name again, a deliberate break, the page says, with the "unrühmlichen Vergangenheit der Freiherren von Brandis" (the inglorious past of the Barons of Brandis). For guests from abroad, that story is part of the appeal: a wedding in a complex whose oldest tower was built around 1247.
The wedding offer and the spaces
The wedding page itself names no rooms and no capacities. It offers a wedding brochure, the Hochzeitsbroschüre, and a contact button. The page's meta description gives a better sense of the possibilities: a fairy-tale wedding in the castle garden, a company anniversary in the castle courtyard, or a big family birthday in the restaurant, organized together with the castle's event partners and built on years of event experience.
The site's menu lists the outlets that make up the castle: the restaurant, the restaurant garden, the bistro and enoteca, the bar and the lounge, alongside a business events section, opening hours and gift vouchers. There is also an ice rink, the Eisfeld, which runs in 2026 and can be reserved. For a wedding, the garden for the ceremony or aperitif and the historic restaurant rooms for dinner are the obvious combination, but the brochure is where the specifics sit.
Food and wine
The food concept is spelled out on the about page. The kitchen "erweist der Tradition gebührenden Respekt, verpasst ihr aber auch einen modernen Twist" (pays due respect to tradition but gives it a modern twist), varying typical dishes of the region with the seasons, which the page says makes for "frische, kreative und spannende Genussentdeckungen" (fresh, creative and exciting discoveries). Suppliers are kept close: the castle relies on local producers and businesses and short delivery routes. The castle also has its own vineyard, the Rebberg.
The team is named. Matthias Baumgartner is head chef, Ruedi Zimmermann sous chef, Martina Hidber handles events and marketing, Marvin Lemke leads the restaurant with Carmen Widrig as deputy, and Thomas Zindel is listed as host. The 1Xanders management team is led by managing director Tim Disch. The same company runs two other restaurants shown on the page. Alp Arosa is described as a mountain restaurant of a different kind, with alpine cooking and an all-round view of the Arosa Alps, and the new StüvaArosa as a meeting place with several outlets and a varied food concept. The management list also names Martina Hidber, Andrea Disch, Vanessa Kistler, Sascha Nicol and Marc Jucker as partners or shareholders of 1Xanders, which shows a hospitality group behind the castle kitchen rather than a single restaurateur.
Contact and language
The castle is reached on +41 81 302 24 23 or at info@schlossmaienfeld.ch, and the wedding page has a contact button and the brochure. The site is in German only and does not say whether the team plans weddings in English. Martina Hidber, as the named events contact, is the person to write to.
What the site does not say
The site gives no capacities for any room or for the garden, no prices, no menus and no package. It does not say whether a ceremony can be held at the castle, civil or symbolic, or whether the castle can be booked exclusively or shares the evening with restaurant guests. It says nothing about accommodation for guests, parking, directions or how late a party can run, and it does not name the event partners behind its cooperation, mobility and champagne sections. It also gives no wedding season or blocked dates, although the opening-hours page is the place to check when the restaurant itself is open. The brochure and the first conversation have to fill those gaps.
Who it suits
Schloss Maienfeld suits a couple who want a real castle with a documented history, a garden and a kitchen that takes regional food seriously, in a small historic town in Graubünden rather than a mountain resort. It suits couples who want the restaurant team and the events contact to be known people, named on the site.
It suits less well a couple who need capacities, prices or English-language material before they make contact, and guests will need to find rooms elsewhere, since the site does not offer any.
