Kloster St. Urban
Tap a star to rate
Kloster St. Urban is a former monastery at Schafmattstrasse 1, 4915 St. Urban, in the municipality of Pfaffnau in the canton of Lucerne, whose baroque rooms are hired out for weddings and other events. The wedding page opens with a promise to support couples "ob standesamtlich, kirchlich oder frei" (whether civil, church or free), and all three can happen on the site. An events office runs the bookings and a gastronomy team cooks.
It is worth being clear about who runs it. The venue is not run by a religious community; the award page congratulates "dem Team Hotellerie der Luzerner Psychiatrie AG" (the hospitality team of Luzerner Psychiatrie AG) on the venue's wedding award, so the event business sits with that company's hospitality team. The former monastery church is today the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Urban.
Civil Ceremonies in the Baroque Rooms
The civil ceremony section is unusually detailed. St. Urban belongs to the civil registry district of Amt Willisau, and the Regionales Zivilstandsamt Willisau is responsible for civil weddings there. According to the page, civil ceremonies are possible at several places set by that office, including the baroque rooms of the monastery, and they can be held in three of them: the Abtsaal (abbot's hall), the Gästerefektorium (guest refectory) and the Festsaal (banquet hall). The page links an information sheet, «Zivile Trauung in St. Urban», as a PDF.
For information and registration the page names the registry office directly: Regionales Zivilstandsamt Willisau, Schlossstrasse 5, 6130 Willisau, zivilstandsamt@willisau.ch, telephone 041 972 71 91. A couple from abroad deals with the registry office on the civil paperwork and with the monastery's events team on the room. Any question about documents or eligibility for a foreign couple belongs with the registry office, not the venue.
Church Weddings and Blessings
The Klosterkirche is presented as a popular place for church weddings. The page describes it as "in schlichtem Weiss mit Stuckaturen aus der Barockzeit" (in plain white with stucco work from the baroque period). Because it is now a parish church, the religious side of a church wedding is a matter for the parish; the page does not name a priest or say how the parish handles couples from outside.
Church weddings can also be held in other rooms: the Abtsaal, the Bibliothek (library), the Gästerefektorium, the Festsaal and the Klosterpark (the monastery park). A second information sheet, «Heiraten in St. Urban», covers this.
The third option is a Segnung (blessing), which the monastery offers as a ceremony shaped around the couple. The page defines blessings as "das Zusprechen von Lebenskraft in Berufung auf Gott" (conferring strength for life in the name of God), so it is a religious blessing, not a secular free ceremony. It can take place in the Abtsaal, Bibliothek, Gästerefektorium, Festsaal or Klosterpark, and the events team offers to help design it.
The Rooms
The five spaces named across the wedding page are the Abtsaal, the Bibliothek, the Gästerefektorium, the Festsaal and the Klosterpark. The award page quotes eventlokale.ch on "die imposanten Räume und die grosszügig dimensionierte Parkanlage" (the imposing rooms and the generously sized park). A separate page shows a wedding photo shoot held in different rooms of the monastery, with a PDF of the rooms, which is a good way to see the spaces before a visit.
The site does not give a capacity for any room on these pages, and it does not say which room is used for dinner at which guest count. Those are the first numbers to ask the events team for.
Catering From the House
The gastronomy page offers help turning a couple's ideas into an event and advice on choosing menu components. Its suggestions are meant as a starting point: couples can combine the apéro and menu components as they like, or name a favorite dish. A brochure (PDF) with the event gastronomy is linked.
On sourcing, the page states: "Für unsere Speisen verarbeiten wir ausschliesslich Schweizer Geflügel (Freilandhaltung) und Schweizer Frischfleisch aus der Region" (for our dishes we use only Swiss free-range poultry and fresh Swiss meat from the region). Vegetables and fruit are bought seasonally, a large share from farms nearby, and fish is used only with recognized labels such as MSC, Fair Fish and Dolphine-Safe.
The same team also runs large-scale community catering for staff restaurants, a canteen, a crèche and a school, and the page says it has wide experience with apéros, banquets and conferences. That community catering uses a cook-and-chill method: food is pre-cooked to about 90 %, cooled to 3-5 degrees, plated cold and finished on site. The page describes this for the community catering; couples should ask how their wedding dinner is prepared.
The Award
The award page says the Swiss Location Award has recognized event venues in ten categories since 2016, and that Kloster St. Urban was honored again in 2024 in the wedding venue category, in a vote by 65,346 organizers and visitors plus an independent jury. For 2021, 2022 and 2023 the page gives a score of 8.7 out of 10 points each year. It gives no score for 2024.
For a Couple From Abroad
The site is in German, and it does not say whether the events team works in English. The gastronomy page links a directions and site map page (Anfahrt Lageplan), but the wedding page does not name a station, parking or airport transfer, and it mentions no guest rooms. Couples should ask about arrival, parking and nearby hotels, and about step-free access in the historic rooms, which the site does not address.
No prices are published for rooms, ceremonies or menus. Contact for the church wedding, blessings and events: Kloster St. Urban Eventmanagement, event-kloster@st-urban.ch, 058 856 50 80. The culture office is on 058 856 57 10.
Who It Suits
St. Urban suits couples who want a baroque setting with a legal civil ceremony possible in the building itself, followed by dinner in the same halls. It also suits couples with a church wedding or religious blessing in mind, since the parish church and several rooms are available for that.
It suits less well couples wanting a secular free ceremony with a celebrant of their own choice, which the page does not describe, or those who need capacity figures and prices before the first contact.
