A Zermatt boutique hotel that plans the whole wedding

Matthiol is a boutique hotel at Moosstrasse 40 in Zermatt, Valais, with its own restaurants, a private spa and apartments alongside the hotel. Its wedding page, published in English, German and French, presents the hotel as a planner as much as a venue: the team helps couples choose the ceremony location, handles flowers and invitation cards, arranges hair and makeup, and hosts the aperitif, the dinner and the guests' stay. The German page puts the promise as "Bis ins kleinste Detail für alles gesorgt" (everything taken care of down to the smallest detail), and the English page says the team plans with the couple from the invitations to the last dance. The German page also leans on experience, "Unsere Erfahrung ist unser Versprechen" (our experience is our promise), rather than on a list of packages.

The appeal for a couple from abroad is that one hotel team covers most of the day, in a mountain resort where finding and coordinating local suppliers from a distance would otherwise be hard.

The ceremony

The ceremony places the wedding page names are in Zermatt rather than in the hotel, and the team offers to help couples choose between them: in the English page's words, "The small mountain chapel on Schwarzsee, the romantic chapel in Winkelmatten or the large, solemn church of Zermatt." The German page's introduction runs from the aperitif surrounded by mountains to the "Ja-Wort in der Kapelle in Winkelmatten" (the vows in the chapel at Winkelmatten), and the English and French introductions name the Winkelmatten chapel too.

Around the ceremony, the German page says the team takes care of everything from the floral decoration to matching invitation cards to create the right atmosphere. The hotel also organizes professional makeup artists and hairdressers for the bride, her mother and the bridesmaids.

The wedding page does not mention a civil ceremony or how a church wedding in the named chapels is booked. Couples who need a legal marriage or have a particular religious requirement should raise it at the first enquiry.

Aperitif, dinner and the setting

The food section describes the day's order. The aperitif or a starter takes place "at the brink of the Matterhorn" in the hotel's mountain restaurant, Stafelalp, or in the garden of the Boutique Hotel. Dinner follows at Filet et Fils, the hotel's restaurant, as "a modern gourmet dinner inspired by the mountains," made "with carefully selected ingredients, heart and soul." The menu is planned together with the couple: "Together, we'll make a menu that compliments your day."

The English page also offers help if couples want to hold the reception surrounded by the mountains or take their first photos as a couple by the mountain lakes, and says the team specializes in memorable experiences in the middle of nature. The German page adds that couples can celebrate surrounded by the mountain panorama and then keep the moment at the "märchenhaften Bergsee" (storybook mountain lake).

The pages give no capacity for Filet et Fils, Stafelalp or the garden, and no sample menus or prices.

Rooms for the guests

The stay section is the most concrete part of the page. The couple stay in one of the hotel's suites, and "our hotel can host up to 62 guests." Guests can use the private spa and eat breakfast in the hotel's restaurant the morning after. The site's navigation also lists apartments and a page to compare the accommodation, which may help for larger families. The menu also has pages for spa treatments and massages, offers and activities, useful for guests who come for several days rather than one night. The page does not say how many rooms the hotel has, what they cost for a wedding group, or whether all of them can be reserved for one wedding.

Exclusive hire and other events

Under the heading "Got bigger plans?", the page says the hotel and restaurant can also be rented for corporate events or private parties, with a tailor-made offer. The French page speaks of renting "notre hôtel et son restaurant" (our hotel and its restaurant). That means an exclusive booking of the house is on the table, although the page frames it for company and private events rather than weddings specifically.

Language and contact

The wedding page exists in full in English, German and French, so a couple who does not read German can follow the whole offer. The site does not state which languages the planning team works in. Enquiries go to info@matthiol.com or +41 27 968 17 17, and the page has an enquiry button. The site's menu lists opening hours and an FAQ page, which are the places to check for seasonal closures.

What the site does not settle

The site publishes no prices for any part of a wedding: no dinner prices per head, no room rates, no fee for planning and no deposit or cancellation terms. It gives no capacity for the dinner at Filet et Fils or for an aperitif at Stafelalp, only the 62 overnight guests. It does not say whether the planning help is included or charged, whether the makeup and hair session is part of a package, which photographers or musicians the hotel works with, or whether couples can bring their own. It does not describe how guests get from the hotel to Stafelalp or to the Schwarzsee chapel, and the wedding page does not say which months weddings are possible.

Who it suits

Matthiol suits couples who want a mountain wedding in Zermatt with the hotel handling most of the arrangements: the chapel, flowers, invitations, styling, aperitif, dinner and rooms. With space for 62 guests to stay, it fits a wedding of family and close friends where everyone sleeps in the same house, and the choice between a small mountain chapel and the village church lets couples set the scale of the ceremony.

It suits less well a couple who wants prices before the first conversation, a large reception with a guest list well beyond the hotel's beds, or a civil ceremony handled on site. The ceremony places the page names are all outside the hotel, so couples should plan for moving guests between the chapel, the mountain restaurant and the dinner.
