Frau Gerolds Garten

Frau Gerold's own opening press release, dated 5 June 2012, doesn't call itself a new restaurant. It calls itself a stopgap with a number attached: "eröffnet Ende Juni als Zwischennutzung für 5 Jahre Frau Gerold erstmals die Tore ihres neuen Gastro-Gartens auf dem Gerold-Areal," Frau Gerold opens the gates of her new garden restaurant at the end of June as an interim use for 5 years. The plot the release describes, directly behind the Freitag Tower in Zurich's Kreis 5, was earmarked for something else entirely: "Dort wo künftig das Kongresszentrum stehen soll," where a congress centre is meant to stand in the future. The release even specifies how the garden was engineered to leave: "Das Projekt ist so konzipiert, dass es nach Ablauf der Zwischennutzung mit Sack und Pack, Garten wie Restaurant umziehen kann," the whole project designed so that once the interim use ends, garden and restaurant alike can move out entirely, so that nothing stands in the way of that later congress house. 14 years on, in 2026, the congress centre hasn't been built, Frau Gerolds Garten is still open, and its own About page has quietly dropped the number: it now describes the project only as meant to create "für ein paar Jahre einen Ort der Begegnung," a place of encounter for a few years, without naming which few.

"Frau Gerold" is a fictional hostess persona, not a real person's name on a lease. The garden opened on a plot the operator's own release says was, until shortly before, a Tiefbauamt work yard (a civil-engineering office's storage ground), at Geroldstrasse 23, on a 2500 square metre site near the foot of the Prime Tower in Zurich West. It was the project of miteinander GmbH, the operators of the nearby Maag Halle, working with Katja Weber, Markus Liechtenstein and Patrick Isler, who took over day-to-day management. What went up was, by design, temporary architecture: a double-decked shipping-container terrace ("Schiffs-Container-Terrasse") next to a working urban garden, where roughly a quarter of the plot still grows herbs, vegetables and fruit for the kitchen, tended today by the landscaping firm Kraut + Quer.

3 identities, changing twice a year

Unlike a hotel ballroom that looks the same in January and July, Frau Gerolds Garten physically becomes a different business twice a year, on dates it prints on its own site rather than leaving to "spring" and "autumn." The Sommersaison runs from 3 April to 26 September 2026: a garden restaurant with a sun terrace, open-air bars, and self-service lunch and dinner menus that change daily, plus table reservations for groups of 10 to 120. A short Terrassensaison bridges the gap, 27 September to 8 October 2026, just 12 days of drinks and a grill menu before the next changeover. Then the Wintersaison takes over, 9 October 2026 through 5 March 2027: guests move into the enclosed Winterstube, with 240 seats, and the adjoining outdoor Winter-Garten, redecorated for the season with fire pits, blankets and furs and holding, per the site's own count, "über 350 Sitzplätze," more than 350 seats. A recruitment page aimed at kitchen staff, not at couples, gives the clearest numbers on scale: up to 800 guests a day across 600 seats in winter, and up to 2500 guests a day across 800 seats in summer, all on the same 2500 square metre footprint. Between seasons the whole site gets rebuilt: different furniture, a different kitchen focus (grill and salads in summer, fondue and raclette in winter), even a different name for the same outdoor ground (Sommer-Garten versus Winter-Garten). Even within a season, the posted hours carry a standing caveat, "Änderungen gemäss Witterung möglich," changes possible depending on the weather, since the whole operation runs outdoors or semi-outdoors. A couple planning a date months out is choosing which of 3 physically different venues will exist that week, not the same one in different weather.

120 guests on one page, 200 on another

The /gruppen page's own listing for Frau Gerolds Garten (as opposed to its 2 associated venues, more on those below) states a group range of "10 - 120 Personen." Online reservations run through an Aleno booking widget capped at 40 people; anything from 41 upward has to go by email to info@fraugerold.ch, a cap the winter-specific page restates on its own, word for word, before adding that anyone wanting more than 40 in the Winter-Garten should write in directly. That's the only capacity figure Frau Gerolds Garten publishes on the pages built for a couple or an event planner to read, but it isn't the only one the operator publishes anywhere. A separate recruitment page, describing what the kitchen actually handles day to day, states that in summer the garden also caters to "größere Gruppen mit bis zu 200 Personen," larger groups of up to 200 people, for its grill-based offering, 80 more than the ceiling given on the page written for bookings. Neither page is dated as the correction of the other, and nothing on either explains the gap.

How far ahead a couple could actually lock in a date is worth checking against the operator's own behaviour rather than assuming a hotel-style booking horizon. A homepage news item, posted while the 2026 summer season was still running, announces: "Der Winter 2026-27 naht... und wir öffnen unsere Reservationskanäle für Gruppenanlässe," winter 2026-27 is approaching and the reservation channels for group events are opening now, alongside a note that a second Fondue Chalet is being added for the high season. The channel for booking a winter party, in other words, opens only once the current season is already well underway, not years ahead of it. Nothing published anywhere on fraugerold.ch offers a couple the option of confirming a date more than one season out.

The word "Hochzeit" belongs to Micas Garten, not to this address

Search the /gruppen page, the one place fraugerold.ch lists group and event capacities together, and the word "Hochzeit," wedding, appears exactly once. It sits inside the paragraph for Micas Garten, not Frau Gerolds Garten: "Der perfekte Rahmen für ein Firmen- oder Familienfest, Jubiläum, eine Hochzeit oder Sommerparty am Eingangsportal zum Limmattal," the perfect setting for a company or family celebration, an anniversary, a wedding or a summer party at the gateway to the Limmat valley. Micas Garten is a related but separate business: a different address, Badenerstrasse 790 in the 8048 postcode of Zurich-Altstetten, run as its own GmbH though bound to Frau Gerolds Garten AG by a shared set of terms and conditions covering both properties. Its own group brackets run from 30 to 400 people for a catered grill buffet and, for an exclusive booking, from 401 up to 1500 for a full street-food market. Nowhere in the paragraph describing Frau Gerolds Garten's own 10-to-120 bracket, on the same page, does the word wedding, or any occasion word at all, appear. A third operator sharing the Geroldstrasse address, Braschler's Bar, fills the exclusive-groups niche that would actually suit a wedding reception's size, 30 to 150 people, but its own copy pitches only a "Grillbuffet und Apéro" and hands enquiries to an external partner, braschlers.ch, with no wedding language either. A recruitment page describing the kinds of special events the garden itself hosts in summer names "EM, WM, Betriebsjubiläum," a European football championship, a World Cup screening, a company anniversary, as its own examples, and a wedding isn't among them. On the evidence fraugerold.ch itself publishes, the wedding word belongs to the sister garden in Altstetten, not to the one behind the Freitag Tower.

No banquet menu, no vendor list, no mention of who marries you

Whatever a private group actually gets at Frau Gerolds Garten, the site never spells it out as a wedding package. There's no dedicated banquet menu (the site describes only a daily-changing self-service lunch and dinner menu, the same one every table gets), no bridal suite, no styling or decor options, and no list of recommended photographers, florists or caterers of the kind several other venues in this category publish. A group booking over 40 gets an email conversation, not a form with occasion-specific fields. Payment across the whole site runs on cards and Twint only, "nur Kartenzahlungen"; there's no car parking on site, "Autoparkplätze: nein," though bicycle parking is available, so a guest list arriving from a hotel would need public transport or a taxi. Nothing on fraugerold.ch names a civil registrar, a Zivilstandsamt, or any cantonal approval for a ceremony on the property, on the group-booking pages or the About page alike; the site is silent on the legal side of a wedding day entirely, and this write-up won't guess which way that silence cuts. The whole domain checked here, home page through Impressum, is German only. The page markup itself declares the language as English, lang="en", on every page, yet the only language alternate the site offers is German, hreflang="de"; there's no language toggle in the navigation and no English version of a single page, group offer or policy anywhere in the sitemap. A foreign or English-speaking couple would be booking, corresponding and reading the cancellation terms in German from the first email onward.

14 years into a 5-year plan

None of that makes Frau Gerolds Garten an unstable choice today. 14 years of continuous operation, nearly 3 times its own original 5-year term, is a longer track record than plenty of venues that never had to describe themselves as temporary at all. What it does mean is that a couple is booking a site that has, on its own paper trail, already outlived one stated expiry date by 9 years without ever publishing a new one. The container terrace was engineered from day one to be dismantled and moved "mit Sack und Pack" if the congress centre the city once planned for this land ever gets built, and nothing on the current site retracts that design brief, only softens its language from a number to "a few years." For a couple who wants an unpretentious, plant-filled garden party with self-service food and drink, booked within the same season rather than years out, and happy to arrange the ceremony itself elsewhere, Frau Gerolds Garten delivers exactly that. For a couple who wants a venue confirmed several seasons ahead, an English-language contact, or a site that uses the word wedding about its own address rather than its neighbour's in Altstetten, this isn't that site, and nothing on fraugerold.ch claims otherwise.
