Museum Aargau, Schloss Wildegg

A castle that is a museum first

Schloss Wildegg stands at Effingerweg 5 in 5103 Wildegg, in the canton of Aargau. It is one of the 10 museum locations run by Museum Aargau, alongside Schloss Lenzburg, Schloss Hallwyl, Schloss Habsburg, the Klosterhalbinsel Wettingen, Kloster Königsfelden, the Legionärspfad and Vindonissa Museum, the collection center in Egliswil and the IndustriekulTour Aabach. The rental page heads its offer "Feiern in barocker Schloss-Atmosphäre", celebrating in a baroque castle atmosphere, and says Schloss Wildegg rents rooms for weddings, banquets, aperitifs, business events and cultural events for a maximum of 200 people.

That framing matters. The castle is a public museum with opening hours, admission prices, gardens, a playground and a museum forest above it, and the rooms are rented around that. The Museum Aargau site describes its locations as offering 2000 years of history at the original sites, and Wildegg's own menu points to exhibitions and tours, the gardens, the castle domain and its history. Couples get a genuine historic setting, and a booking process run by a museum rather than a hotel events desk.

The spaces and their capacities

The rental page lists each bookable space with a maximum headcount:

  • Schlossscheune (the castle barn): up to 200 people, described as a representative setting for weddings, business events and cultural events.
  • Schlossscheune mit Lindenterrasse: the barn together with the linden terrace, up to 200 people, a flexible offer with indoor and outdoor areas.
  • Schlossscheune mit Schlosshof: the barn together with the castle courtyard, up to 120 people, also indoor and outdoor.
  • Bistro Erlachhaus: up to 25 people, reserved for an aperitif, lunch or a children's party.
  • Dachstock Erlachhaus: the attic of the Erlachhaus, up to 15 people, for small private celebrations.
  • Ziviltraulokal Eingangshalle: the entrance hall as a civil wedding room, up to 45 people.
  • Ziviltraulokal Salon: a salon as a civil wedding room, up to 21 people.

The 2 civil wedding rooms carry a note that they are booked through the Zivilstandsamt Lenzburg, the civil registry office in Lenzburg, not through the museum. So a couple who wants the civil ceremony inside the castle and the celebration in the barn deals with 2 bodies: the registry office for the ceremony room and Museum Aargau for the rest.

Ceremonies and event types

The booking tool lets couples filter by event type. Under ceremonies it lists Ziviltrauung (civil ceremony), Freie Trauung (free ceremony) and Kirchliche Trauung (church ceremony). Other categories are business event, cultural event, celebration, standing aperitif and banquet. The page does not explain what each ceremony type involves at Wildegg, beyond the registry-office note on the 2 civil rooms, so a couple planning a church or free ceremony should ask where on the grounds it can take place.

For a wedding, the natural combinations are clear from the list: a civil ceremony in the entrance hall or salon, then an aperitif on the linden terrace or in the courtyard and dinner in the barn. With the barn alone the ceiling is 200; with the courtyard option it drops to 120.

Season and the booking calendar

Rentals are possible only between April and October; each space is marked "Buchbar von April bis Oktober" (bookable from April to October). A winter wedding is not an option here.

The second rule concerns timing. The page says "Ab dem 1. Januar des aktuellen Jahres sind Buchungsanfragen für das darauffolgende Jahr möglich": from January 1 of the current year, booking requests for the following year are possible. A couple planning a wedding for next year can only send the request once that January has come, and anyone set on a particular Saturday should be ready when the window opens. The online tool asks for a date and lets you add up to three offers to one request at once, for example the barn alone and the barn with terrace, before sending it.

What the page does not publish

The rental page publishes no prices for any space. It says nothing about catering: whether the museum works with a set caterer, whether couples can bring their own, or what furniture is included. It gives no end time for evening events and says nothing about decoration rules, sound limits or whether museum visitors are on the grounds during a private event. It also does not state whether a rental is exclusive. These are the questions to put in the first request.

Some visitor facts are on the page and help with planning. The museum is open from April 1 to November 1, 2026, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, and closed on Mondays, which overlaps the wedding season exactly. Admission is CHF 14 for adults, CHF 10 for apprentices and students and CHF 8 for children aged 6 to 16. Whether wedding guests pay admission to see the castle rooms is not stated.

Language, contact and arrival

The Museum Aargau site has a language switcher for German, French and English, which helps a couple from abroad read the general visitor information. The rental page and the booking tool read in German. The page does not say whether the events team handles requests in English, so it is worth writing in English and asking.

Contact is by phone on 0848 871 200, and the page links to a contact page and an Anreise (directions) page. It does not itself name the nearest station or the parking situation, and it says nothing about accommodation, so guests coming from Zurich or further afield will need the directions page and a hotel plan of their own.

Who it suits

Schloss Wildegg suits couples who want a castle setting run by a public institution, a summer-half date, and a guest count up to 200 in the barn. The civil rooms in the castle itself are a real draw for a couple who wants the civil ceremony and the party on one site, as long as they are happy to deal with the Lenzburg registry office for the first part.

It suits less well a couple looking for a single all-inclusive package from one contact, a winter wedding, or anyone who needs a price before they commit time to the inquiry. The booking window opening on January 1 for the following year also rules it out for couples planning much further ahead than that.
