Schlossrestaurant Habsburg

Schlossrestaurant Habsburg is the restaurant inside Schloss Habsburg, at Schlossgasse 30 in 5245 Habsburg, in the canton of Aargau. The castle is known as the ancestral seat of the Habsburg dynasty; the restaurant's history page dates the first buildings to the 11th century. Since 1979 the surviving western part of the castle has housed a restaurant and the castle museum, while the eastern part has been a ruin since the Habsburgs left. The castle has belonged to the canton of Aargau since 1804. The restaurant is leased and run by the regional hotel group Aargauhotels.ch, which took over the lease in 2014.

For a wedding, the restaurant sells the full day on one site: the civil ceremony, the aperitif on the terrace and dinner in the knights' hall, with its own kitchen doing the food.

The day as the restaurant describes it

The wedding page opens with the range it covers: "Von der familiären Ziviltrauung bis hin zur grossen Hochzeitsfeier", from a small family civil wedding to a large wedding party. It then describes the sequence. The civil ceremony takes place in the Schlossstube, guests move to the terrace for the wedding aperitif with a view over the canton of Aargau, and the wedding meal follows in the Rittersaal, the knights' hall, set for the occasion, with the party running into the early hours.

The page states that Schloss Habsburg is an "offizielles, auswärtiges Traulokal des Zivilstandsamts Brugg für bis zu 100 Personen": an official external wedding venue of the Brugg civil registry office, for up to 100 people. Civil ceremonies there are possible, by arrangement with the registry office, on Fridays and on selected Saturday dates. The inquiry form also offers a free ceremony (freie Trauung) as an option alongside the civil one, and a choice of no ceremony at all, so couples who marry elsewhere can still hold the celebration here.

Rooms and capacities

The figures differ slightly by page, and it helps to read them together:

  • The wedding page says the rooms in the castle are available for 10 to 100 people.
  • The same page, under rooms, says "Von 16 bis 300 Personen", from 16 to 300 people, from the Jägerstube (hunters' room) to the Rittersaal and the large Hofterrasse (courtyard terrace).
  • The banquet page calls the Rittersaal the heart of the house, with capacity for up to 100 people, and says 3 further rooms in the castle take up to 30 people each.

The pages do not explain how the figure of 300 is reached. The number they give for the Rittersaal and for a civil ceremony is 100. Couples with more than 100 guests should ask how the terrace would be used and what happens in bad weather. The site links to a page describing every room in detail.

Food and drink

The wedding page makes a point of the kitchen: "Besonders angenehm: Wir sind nicht nur Hochzeitslocation, sondern ebenfalls Restaurationsbetrieb". The venue is a working restaurant, not only a wedding location. The castle kitchen offers regional, fresh dishes, unusual aperitifs and detailed advice on putting menus together. The banquet page adds that for groups of 10 or more a single menu is agreed, and it suggests either the house's "Ritterspiele der Gerichte" (a knights' feast of dishes) or a menu created with the couple. A Rittermahl, a knights' banquet, is also offered.

The kitchen itself was fully renovated in 2020, according to the history page, along with all the service areas, after 41 years of use. The about page says products come from regional partners.

No prices are shown on these pages. Full information is in the banquet documentation (Bankettdokumentation), which both the wedding and banquet pages offer as a download, and a couple can also request an offer through the form.

Team, museum and the setting

The about page names a team of 20 around Pascal Rothmund, who has been head chef at the Habsburg and also Schlossherr (lord of the castle, in effect the host) since April 1, 2025. Museum Aargau runs a museum in the castle with exhibitions, tours and events. From April to October it is open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 to 17, and from November to March during the restaurant's opening hours. Guests arriving early can see the castle's history before the ceremony.

The wedding page also points couples to wedding stories on the blog of the Aarau photographer Cornelius Fischer, and to its own posts, including a couple's account of their wedding at the Habsburg.

Accommodation and transport

The partner hotel is the Centurion Towerhotel in nearby Windisch/Brugg, which the about page describes as having modern rooms. Guests booking in combination with an event get special conditions, and the restaurant offers to organize a shuttle between the hotel and the castle and back, for a charge ("Kostenpflichtig"). The page adds that the hotel is easy to reach by train. The Aargauhotels.ch group also lists hotels in Lenzburg, Villmergen, Suhr, Aarau and Zofingen.

The pages do not mention parking at the castle or a bus connection to it, so couples with guests who do not want to use the shuttle should ask how to get up to Habsburg.

Booking and language

The inquiry form asks for the type of event, time of day (lunch, dinner or all day), preferred date, number of guests, whether a ceremony is wanted and of which kind, the number of people at the ceremony and whether an aperitif should be added. Contact is by phone on +41 (0)56 441 16 73 or email at info@schlossrestaurant-habsburg.ch. The site is in German, and it does not say whether weddings can be planned in English.

Who it suits

Schlossrestaurant Habsburg suits couples who want a civil ceremony and the whole celebration in one historic castle, with up to 100 guests, a restaurant kitchen and a team used to banquets. The partner hotel with a shuttle solves the night for guests who come from further away.

It suits less well a couple whose wedding falls on a Saturday that the registry office does not offer, a guest list well above 100 at dinner, or couples who need an English-language planning process confirmed before they start. Those points are worth settling in the first inquiry.
