The reservation page ends with an unusual offer. Book a table at Restaurant Sonnenberg and, if there is no room, the site does not apologise and stop there. It points you elsewhere: "Ausgebucht? Die Boutique Restaurant der Segmüller Collection bieten köstliche Alternativen in Zürich," fully booked, the Segmüller Collection's boutique restaurants offer delicious alternatives in Zurich, with a link straight to the collection's own site. The same footer runs on every page: Carlton, James Joyce, Adlisberg, Loft Five, La Bottega di Mario, Sablier, Roof Garden, Bodega Española, Sonnenberg. 9 restaurants under one name, and Sonnenberg's own booking page treats the other 8 as legitimate substitutes for itself.

The legal name behind that list, printed in the site's Impressum, is Carlton Zürich AG, Restaurants & Bar, with Markus Segmüller as the named contact and an address on Bahnhofstrasse 41 in central Zurich, downtown, not on the hill. The About page confirms the arrangement in plain language: "People Management, Marketing, Einkauf und Administration werden in der Segmüller Collection zentral geführt," people management, marketing, procurement and administration are run centrally by the Segmüller Collection. What sits on the hill itself is a team of 3, named on the same page: Marilla Müller as Geschäftsführerin, managing director, Michael Schneider as Küchenchef, head chef, and Michelle Ludwig as Leiterin Events & Administration, head of events and administration, the person a couple planning a wedding would actually deal with. A booking here runs through a local team with a downtown back office behind it, the same structure that lets the reservation page shrug off a full house and point a couple toward Adlisberg or Roof Garden instead.

The rooms: an exclusive top tier, a terrace with 2 capacities, and 4 district names

Restaurant Sonnenberg's own banquet copy describes the building as convertible into 4 separate zones, each borrowed from a different Zurich neighbourhood rather than named for anything in the room itself: Seefeld, Hottingen, Fluntern and Höngg. The banquet brochure adds a footnote to one of them: Bereich Hottingen "ist nur bei exklusiven Buchungen verfügbar und kann nicht für einzelne Gruppen reserviert werden," available only as part of an exclusive booking of the whole property, never reservable for a single group on its own. Seefeld, per the private-events page, is where the site suggests baby showers and christenings; Höngg is where it seats the Sunday lunch crowd. None of the 4 is presented as the wedding room specifically.

Above them, on the upper floor, sits Bellevue, described as a separate room with its own terrace and bar, seating 20 to 40 guests for a banquet or holding 20 to 90 for a standing reception. Downstairs, the Gartenterrasse is the outdoor space, and it is the one figure on the site that does not hold still: the banquet page gives it a seated capacity of 6 to 120 guests, while the same room in the downloadable Bankettbroschüre reads 10 to 80. Both documents agree exactly on the standing count, 15 to 250, so only the seated number moves depending on which of the operator's own pages a couple happens to read. Book the whole property together as "Sonnenberg exklusiv," restaurant, Bellevue and Gartenterrasse combined, and both sources agree again: 140 to 200 seated, 200 to 290 standing, the same range the "Ihr Event" page rounds down to "bis zu 250 Gästen," up to 250 guests.

A wedding dinner after a ceremony held somewhere else

Neither the wedding page nor the banquet brochure uses the words Zivilstandsamt, Standesamt or registrar anywhere. What the brochure does say, in a short list of sample bookings under the heading "Nur für Sie," pictures "einem Hochzeitsessen nach der zivilen Trauung," a wedding dinner after the civil ceremony, in the same bulleted list as a client event in Bellevue and a family Sunday roast after a christening. The wedding page itself, in its own separate copy, describes "ein romantisches Dinner mit den Liebsten nach der Ziviltrauung," a romantic dinner with loved ones after the civil marriage. Both phrasings assume the same order of events: the legally binding act happens first, somewhere else, and Sonnenberg's own copy pictures itself hosting only what comes after. Nothing on the site claims the property holds cantonal approval to host that first part, and nothing denies it either. The site is simply silent about it, on every page checked.

2 stock photographs, and no photograph of the room being sold

The wedding page's own header image, the first thing a visitor sees, is not a photograph of Restaurant Sonnenberg. Its file name, sebastian-romero-FHS3j6TqhRk-unsplash.jpg, names the Unsplash photographer it was licensed from, and the second image further down the page, luis-tosta-MEZDyn98La8-unsplash.jpg, comes from a different Unsplash photographer entirely. Neither shows a room, a terrace or a table anyone could actually book. One click over, the banquet page runs on the operator's own photography instead, filenames like Sonnenberg-12.jpg, Sonnenberg-19.jpg and 01_BellevueBankett2.jpg that read as a commissioned shoot of the actual property. The wedding page is the one page on the domain selling a specific product with a picture of somewhere else.

Jacky Donatz and FIFA, a decade the current site name-checks but doesn't explain

The About page dates the business to 1960 under the heading "Seit 1960." Its own account of what happened next names a single decade and a single name: "Der Sonnenberg dient als Treffpunkt für die Zürcher Gesellschaft und wurde in den 1990er Jahren unter Jacky Donatz zu einer Institution der Schweizer Gastronomie," Sonnenberg served as a meeting point for Zurich society and became, in the 1990s under Jacky Donatz, an institution of Swiss gastronomy. The next sentence names the institution it kept company with: "Besonders verbunden ist der Sonnenberg mit der FIFA, deren Anlässe und Weltoffenheit unser Restaurant bis heute prägen," Sonnenberg is especially connected to FIFA, whose events and cosmopolitan character continue to shape the restaurant today. The page stops there: no date, no named event, no explanation of what that connection looks like on a menu or in a room booking now. It is the one piece of institutional history on the whole site that reaches outside the restaurant itself, and it is left exactly that unexplained.

Tram 2, tram 3, or a 10-minute walk through the vineyard

The Anreise section on the reservations page gives a specific route rather than a general one: "Tram 2 oder 3 (Station 'Klusplatz')" or "Bus 33 (Haltestelle 'Hölderlinsteig')," then "ein schöner Spaziergang durch das Quartier und den Rebberg," a walk through the neighbourhood and the vineyard, that the site puts at about 10 minutes. That is one option, not the only one: the same paragraph offers a car alternative, "hauseigene Parkplätze direkt vor dem Restaurant," on-site parking spots directly in front of the restaurant, plus a nearby public lot. A wedding party arriving by tram or bus finishes the trip on foot, through a working vineyard rather than a landscaped drive; a party arriving by car skips that walk entirely.

No figure for a wedding, but a separate inbox for one

The brochure's own terms section states that a minimum spend applies to any exclusive booking of a room or zone, "einen Mindestumsatz für die Speise- und Getränkekonsumation," without printing a figure anywhere in the 7-page document. No CHF number for a wedding turns up on the wedding page, the banquet page or the brochure at any point; a couple gets a room list and a capacity table, not a price. What the site does separate out is contact: the general reservations line runs to welcome@sonnenberg-zurich.ch, while the same reservations page lists a second address, events@sonnenberg-zurich.ch, "Für Events & Bankette," for events and banquets specifically, reached at the identical phone number as the general line. A wedding enquiry gets its own inbox even where it does not get its own published price.
