Carmen Wyss

Carmen Wyss is a free wedding celebrant (freie Traurednerin) who writes and leads personal, non-church wedding ceremonies across German-speaking Switzerland and on Ibiza. Her site, freietraurednerin.ch, says she has accompanied more than 100 ceremonies, works «Schweizweit & international» (throughout Switzerland and internationally), and sums up her style in three words: «Strukturiert. Persönlich. Authentisch.» (structured, personal, authentic). She also says she takes only a limited number of ceremonies per season so that each gets her full attention.

How she describes a free ceremony

The homepage opens with a line aimed at a particular kind of couple: «Für Paare, die mehr wollen als eine schöne Hochzeit. Für Paare, die Bedeutung suchen.» (for couples who want more than a nice wedding, for couples looking for meaning). A wedding, she writes, is not an item on a program but a transition into a new stage of life, and a free ceremony gives the couple the freedom to shape that moment consciously, personally, stylishly and without compromise.

She defines a free ceremony plainly: an individually designed ceremony outside church and registry office, where «Der rechtliche Teil findet beim Zivilstandesamt statt» (the legal part takes place at the civil registry office). Her FAQ calls the free ceremony purely symbolic and says it makes no difference whether the civil wedding happens before or after it. It also answers who may lead one: since it is symbolic, anyone can, and some couples ask a relative or a close friend, though she argues that a good ceremony takes experience and empathy. The menu adds "Über mich" (about me) and "Inspiration" sections.

The page lists five elements a ceremony is built from: Ort, Ablauf, Rituale, Ja-Wort, Atmosphäre (place, running order, rituals, the "I do", atmosphere). The site also has a separate "Rituale" section.

What she says sets her apart

Under the heading "Warum eine freie Trauung mit mir anders ist" (why a free ceremony with me is different) she lists four points:

• a text tailored to the couple instead of stock phrases;
• emotion without staging, authentic;
• a calm presence that gives security;
• structure that carries the day.

She closes the list with «Eure Zeremonie soll nicht einfach gefallen. Sie soll wirken.» (your ceremony should not just be liked, it should have an effect).

How the process works

The homepage sets out five steps: getting to know each other (by video call or in person), a personal detailed discussion, writing the individual speech, conducting the ceremony, and feedback. The first step is framed as a chance to see whether you suit each other, and the Ibiza page invites couples to book a free first conversation («kostenloses Erstgespräch»). A video call for the first meeting is useful for couples who live abroad.

Two five-star reviews appear on the homepage. Michaela and Simon wrote that her speech moved them deeply and that she did everything exactly as they had wished; Alexandra and Gianni called it «Witzig und emotional genau wie wir» (funny and emotional, just like us), and said their guests were thrilled.

Where she works

The regions menu lists Zürich, Aargau, Luzern, Zug, Bern, Basel, Zentralschweiz and Ostschweiz, each with its own page. Those regional pages carry little beyond the navigation, so they confirm the areas she names rather than adding detail.

Ibiza gets a full page. She writes that she spent part of her youth on the island, knows it well, and that speaking the language perfectly is a great advantage there. She says she has already accompanied several couples on Ibiza and works exclusively with one wedding planner on the island, who in turn works with long-standing local suppliers. Her tips: choose a central location first, easy for guests to reach, and ideally one where the ceremony, the restaurant and the guests' accommodation are close together. She names example venues by type: hotels by the sea (7 Pines Resort, Hotel Torre del Mar), a country hotel (Hotel Rural Xereca), and beach restaurants (Nikki Beach, Aiyanna, Amante, Cotton Beach Club, Sa Punta). She also notes that many couples combine the wedding with a holiday and spend their honeymoon on the island straight afterward. She is candid about the pace there too: having someone reliable on the spot is always better, she writes, because «die Mühlen auf Ibiza mahlen ja bekanntlich langsamer» (as everyone knows, the mills grind more slowly on Ibiza). Beach, sea-view hotel or finca each have their pros and cons, she adds, and the choice depends on how the couple want the day to feel.

Cost and length

The homepage has a section headed "Transparenz & Investition" that links to a separate page of services and prices; the figures themselves are not on the homepage. Her FAQ does give a benchmark: it says the average cost for a celebrant is around Fr. 2000, and that a professional celebrant can be expensive but need not be. That is her statement about the market, not her own price. On length, the FAQ says that in her experience ceremonies with most celebrants last about 50 minutes.

It does not say whether she leads ceremonies in English. Her remark about speaking the language perfectly refers to Ibiza, not to the language of the ceremony, so a couple who need an English or bilingual ceremony should ask her directly.

What the site does not settle

The homepage does not show her own fees (they are on the linked prices page). It does not say which languages she leads ceremonies in, how far ahead to book given her limited number of ceremonies per season, or how travel costs are charged within Switzerland or to Ibiza. The Ibiza planner is not named.

Who she suits

Carmen Wyss suits German-speaking couples, or couples with German-speaking families, marrying in the Zurich, Bern, Basel, central or eastern Swiss regions who want a carefully structured, personal ceremony. Her Ibiza offer, with a partner planner and first-hand knowledge of the island, makes her a practical choice for Swiss couples planning a destination wedding there.

For couples from abroad, English is the open question. Book the first conversation early, since she limits her ceremonies per season, and ask about language, her fee and travel at the same time.
