Sandra Stirnimann is a photographer in Gelfingen, in the canton of Lucerne, trading as Sandra Stirnimann Fotografie. She photographed her first wedding in 2012, and more than 100 weddings have followed since. Her wedding page describes a style that mixes the romantic and the documentary, and her site carries one of the most useful resources a couple new to the region could ask for: her personal top 10 wedding venues in the canton of Lucerne.

Her Style

In her own words, she loves playing with soft focus ("das Spiel mit der Unschärfe") and puts weight on spontaneous moments and detail shots. She keeps in the background and photographs without being noticed, but she also steps in to help when challenges come up, and keeps people entertained during group photos. Her preference is available light, though she is also glad to use off-camera flash, deliberately staged, when a scene calls for it.

The long list of wedding stories on her site shows how this plays out. Many start with the getting ready and a first look before the ceremony, several end with a couple shoot in the last light of the day, and she writes more than once that she is always pleased when the weather allows photos at sunset. Rain is part of the record too: a first look in the rain at the Rathaus Luzern (one of her favorite locations), a downpour that stopped just in time at the Tropenhaus Wolhusen, a wedding with rain and a rainbow. For couples who worry about the weather, those stories are reassuring.

Weddings on the Site

The wedding reportage page lists dozens of weddings. A few give a sense of the range:

  • a castle wedding that began with the groom getting ready at home and the bride at the Seehotel Sonne
  • civil ceremonies in Lucerne and at the Villa Villette in Zug, followed by a church wedding
  • celebrant-led ceremonies (freie Trauungen) at Startklar in Emmen, at Lake Sempach and at Schloss Huenigen
  • a wedding in the glass house at the Mangerie Egolzwil, moved inside when the weather changed
  • a summer wedding at the foot of the Pilatus with a view over Lucerne and Lake Lucerne
  • a wedding at the Gasthaus Schupfen in Diessenhofen, a winter wedding in Engelberg, and a wedding at the Merian Gärten in Basel
  • a mountain wedding at Trübsee with Swiss and Croatian influences, a mountain wedding in Uri for a Swiss bride and a French groom, and a Swiss-Tamil wedding

That last group matters for international couples. She writes that one of the things she values most as a wedding photographer is getting to know many different cultures.

Her Top 10 Lucerne Venues

The venue page is a practical guide. Every venue on it has room for the ceremony, the apéro and/or the evening celebration, and she notes that she updates the list from time to time:

  1. Mangerie Event-Location in Egolzwil: the glass house feels almost outdoors while sheltered from wind and weather, with gardens for the couple shoot and the apéro; a celebrant-led ceremony can be held inside or in the garden.
  2. Rosstall in Emmen: rustic rooms with a terrace, for ceremonies, apéro and the evening.
  3. Startklar Eventlocation in Emmen, next door: a large industrial-style hall and a room with a carousel.
  4. Haus am See Kraemerstein in Horw, directly on Lake Lucerne, suited to a small civil ceremony, with the grounds of the Villa Krämerstein for the couple shoot.
  5. Hotel Himmelrich, at the foot of the Pilatus, looking over Lucerne and the whole lake.
  6. Schloss Meggenhorn, with its own landing stage on Lake Lucerne.
  7. Schloss Heidegg in Gelfingen, where she has photographed more weddings than anywhere else because she grew up in the village and lives there again; ceremonies in the baroque hall, the small hall or the chapel, apéro in the rose garden, and an indoor option for photos in bad weather.
  8. Golf Sempachersee in Hildisrieden, with views toward the Pilatus and Lake Sempach.
  9. Tropenhaus Wolhusen, another venue that feels like nature while protected from the weather.
  10. Seehotel Sonne in Eich on Lake Sempach, where with luck she can photograph the couple at sunset.

Beyond the Wedding Day

She offers after-wedding photo sessions, which she recommends when a couple had too little time on the day or the weather did not cooperate. Several wedding stories mention engagement shoots, and some couples had their invitation photos taken by her, one pair in the snow. She also photographs marriage proposals: sometimes she hides or disguises herself, for example as a tourist, and sometimes the couple books what looks like an ordinary photo shoot while the person proposing has told her about the plan in advance. She admits she is a little nervous herself every time.

Her site also has a tips page for couples, covering the first look, reserving time at sunset, backlight, an unplugged ceremony without phones, timing the ring exchange and kiss, avoiding shine in makeup (for grooms as well as brides) and planning for rain. The menu also lists a photo book page, family, newborn, pregnancy and portrait sessions, business photography, and coaching.

Contact and Language

Contact details are on every page: Sandra Stirnimann Fotografie, Moosbergstrasse 51, 6284 Gelfingen; email kontakt@sandrastirnimann.ch; phone 076 517 58 61, with the note to use the voicemail or WhatsApp. The wedding page invites couples to write via the contact form or by email for more information and her offers. The site's menu includes a prices page (Preise), which is the place to check current rates before writing.

The site is in German and does not say which languages she works in. WhatsApp and email make first contact easy from abroad, but a couple who does not speak German should ask about English at the start.

What the Wedding Pages Leave Open

The wedding reportage page itself does not set out hours of coverage, the number of images, delivery times or travel costs outside the canton of Lucerne; these belong in her offer, alongside the rates on the prices page.

Who It Suits

Sandra Stirnimann suits couples marrying in and around Lucerne, and especially those who have not yet chosen a venue: her top 10 list is a head start on the region. Her style suits couples who want natural, unposed coverage with some romantic portraits, and her record of multicultural and binational weddings will reassure couples bringing families from abroad. The caveat is a German-only site, so language and terms should be settled in writing before booking.
