A Rolls-Royce with its owner at the wheel
Andre Burri is a Bern classic-car owner who offers Hochzeitsfahrten, chauffeured wedding drives, and the car at the center of his wedding page is a Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn built in 1953. He writes the page in the first person and closes it with "Ich freue mich auf Ihren Auftrag!" (I look forward to your booking), which tells you the scale of the operation: this is one man and his cars, not a limousine company with a dispatcher and a fleet manager.
The page title sums up the pitch: "Der schönste Tag im Leben, der beste Wagen der Welt" (the most beautiful day of your life, the best car in the world). The wording rests on the phrase «der beste Wagen der Welt» (the best car in the world), which the page says was probably coined in the fifties. The line Burri builds on it is "Der beste Wagen der Welt ist für Ihren schönsten Tag des Lebens gerade gut genug" (the best car in the world is just good enough for the most beautiful day of your life). It is a salesman's line, but it is his own, and it frames the offer honestly as a matter of occasion rather than transport.
What the site says about the Silver Dawn
The description of the car is short and specific. According to the page, Rolls-Royce was ahead of its time: the Silver Dawn glides quietly along the road and already had an automatic gearbox. The interior is kept in subdued colors, finished in leather and wood, and, in Burri's words, "von einem Duft vergangener Zeiten erfüllt" (filled with the scent of times gone by). Outside, he describes curved, feminine lines and a majestic presence, and he notes that the British royal court was chauffeured in cars of this kind.
The page shows a gallery of six photographs of the car. For a couple who have never seen a Silver Dawn up close, those photos are the best preview available on the site, and it is worth looking at them before getting in touch, since the car's color and styling set the tone for the photographs of the arrival.
Burri's site also carries a small "Wussten Sie..." (did you know) box that sorts old cars into eras: Antique before 1904, Veteran from 1905 to 1918, Vintage from 1919 to 1930, Post-Vintage from 1931 to 1945, Post War from 1946 to 1960, then Post 1960 and Youngtimer from 1971 to 1980. By his own scheme, the 1953 Silver Dawn is a Post War car. The same box makes the point, with some amusement, that "Oldtimer" means an old man in English, and that English speakers say classic car, vintage car or veteran car instead. It is a small detail, but it suggests an owner who knows his subject and enjoys it.
How the wedding drive works
The service is chauffeured. The page asks couples to let the bride, or the bride and groom together, arrive in royal style: "Lassen Sie die Braut oder das Brautpaar königlich vorfahren." There is no self-drive option on the page, and the menu includes a separate item titled "Ihr Chauffeur" (your chauffeur), which points to Burri presenting the driver as part of the package rather than an extra.
The Rolls-Royce is not the only car. The site's menu lists a section called Fahrzeuge (vehicles) with entries for Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Vanden Plas and Rover. The wedding page itself describes only the Silver Dawn in detail, so if a British saloon other than the Rolls appeals, or if a second car is needed for parents or witnesses, the fleet section is the place to ask about. The site does not say whether two cars can run on the same day with a second driver.
Partners and clubs
Under "Meine Hochzeitspartner" (my wedding partners), Burri links to other suppliers: two florists for wedding flowers and bridal bouquets, Blumen Maarsen and Mario Burkhard, a wedding photographer, Nicole Stadelmann, and a band, Swing & Tanz mit der Ambassador Big Band. The page does not describe what the partnership involves, so treat these as recommendations from someone who works weddings in the Bern area, not as a bundled package.
The menu also links to the Oldtimer Club Bern and the Rolls Royce & Bentley Club. The site does not spell out his role in either club, but the links place him in the local classic-car scene rather than in the commercial rental trade.
What the site leaves open
The site publishes no prices, no hourly rate and no package description. It gives no booking lead time, no service area, and nothing about what happens in bad weather or if the car cannot run on the day. It does not say how many passengers the Silver Dawn carries beyond the couple, or whether the chauffeur waits during the ceremony and drives on to the reception.
For a couple from abroad, the biggest practical point is language. The site is published in German only, and the page gives no indication of whether bookings can be handled in English, French or Italian. Contact runs by phone on +41 79 311 48 11 or by the email address given in the page footer; there is no booking form or availability calendar. A short email in plain English or German, giving the date, the pickup address, the ceremony and reception addresses, and the rough timings, is the natural way to start.
Questions worth putting to him directly:
- the price for the wedding drive, and what time window it covers
- whether he drives outside Bern and how travel to a distant venue is charged
- whether one of the other British cars can run alongside the Rolls
- what happens if the car is unavailable on the day
Who it suits
Andre Burri suits a couple marrying in or around Bern who want a single, memorable arrival in a genuinely old British car, with the owner driving. It is a personal service, and the lack of published terms is typical of a small classic-car owner rather than a warning sign, but it does mean the details have to be settled in conversation and confirmed in writing.
It suits less well a couple who need to compare prices online before making contact, a couple who need to move a wedding party of any size, or a destination couple who cannot manage an exchange in German and have no Swiss contact to help. Couples who want a whole-day, multi-car transport plan are better served by a firm that publishes one. For a couple who want the Silver Dawn outside the church or registry office, and who are happy to arrange it by phone or email, this is about as direct as wedding transport gets.
