Käfertraum rents one car for weddings: a VW Käfer Cabriolet 1500, the convertible Beetle, built in 1969. The business is based at Buchserstrasse 56 in Dielsdorf, and its site has pages for wedding car hire in Zurich, Aargau, Schaffhausen and Thurgau. It is a small, owner-run operation, and the site offers two ways to use the car: with the owners accompanying you on the day, or driving it yourselves.

The car

The homepage describes the Beetle as "Top-restaurierter VW Käfer Cabriolet in Traumzustand," a top-restored convertible in dream condition, and says it comes "mit seinen knapp 50 PS," with just under 50 horsepower. That is a modest engine by any modern standard, and the site does not pretend otherwise. Its pitch is the feel of the thing: "Das Fahrgefühl ist einzigartig, entschleunigend," the driving feel is unique and slows you down, and it says the car puts a broad smile on your face automatically.

The Aargau page adds the practical detail that matters for a wedding. Thanks to the convertible roof you can drive in the fresh air with the sun on your face, and if the weather is not ideal, the top can be closed quickly and easily. The same page calls the Beetle a crowd-pleaser that connects generations and says it looks particularly good in front of castles such as Schloss Lenzburg or Schloss Hallwyl.

The site does not give a seat count, and it says nothing about luggage space or how a full wedding dress fits in the back of a Beetle. For a couple with a long train or a large skirt, that is worth asking before booking, and the owners invite you to come and look at the car in person anyway.

Chauffeured or self-drive

The Aargau page offers the other option: "Bei uns setzen Sie sich selbst ans Steuer!" meaning with them you take the wheel yourself, and it adds that you can enjoy your first drive as a married couple privately, without an outside chauffeur. The site menu has a separate page for self-drivers (Selbstfahrer). The conditions for driving the car yourself, such as age, license, insurance or deposit, are not on the homepage or the Aargau page; ask for them, and a couple with a foreign driving license should ask whether it is accepted.

Beyond the wedding day

The site sells the Beetle for more than weddings. A homepage heading calls it a perfect car for photo shoots, weddings and birthday drives, and the contact form lists company events as an occasion. The site lists two mobile numbers and info@kaefertraum.ch, and the Aargau page invites you to check whether the Beetle is still free on your date. The homepage also says you are welcome to look at the car at their place and take a short drive to get a feel for it. Gift vouchers are available too.

The site is mainly in German, and its language menu lists English as well as German. Whether the owners handle the day itself in English is not stated; ask in your first message.

What the site leaves open

The menu includes a Preise (prices) page, but the homepage and the Aargau page show no rates. Check that page, and ask what a booking includes: how long the car is yours, whether the owners stay through the day, whether decoration is provided or allowed, and what happens if heavy rain is forecast. The site gives no lead time for booking and no cancellation terms on these pages. With one car, a date is simply free or taken, so the earlier you ask the better.

The homepage headings mention years of shared driving experience and years of happy marriage, but no figures appear beside them on the page, so the site does not actually say how long the owners have been doing this.

Käfertraum suits a couple in the Zurich, Aargau, Schaffhausen or Thurgau area who wants a cheerful, small convertible rather than a formal limousine, and it suits couples who would enjoy driving their own first kilometers as a married pair. The chance to see and try the car before booking is a real plus, and the owners' personal involvement comes through on every page.

The limits are just as clear. It is one small car with a modest engine and no stated passenger count, the site pitches it at the couple rather than parents or a bridal party, and the site's coverage stops at the four cantons it names. For a couple who wants a relaxed, photogenic ride between ceremony and reception in the northern part of the country, those limits hardly matter.
