Osteria Grotto da Peo
Tap a star to rate
Osteria Grotto da Peo is a grotto restaurant at Monti di Ronco, 6622 Ronco sopra Ascona, high above Lake Maggiore in Ticino. Its own site calls it one of the finest grottos in Ticino ("gehört zweifellos zu den feinsten Grottos im Tessin"), and its events page lists weddings first among the occasions it hosts. The draw is a simple combination: a recently renovated restaurant with a terrace, a view over the lake, and a chef with a fine-dining record.
The Setting
The homepage describes the grotto as lying high above Lake Maggiore, with a view from its terrace over the Brissago Islands and the glittering blue of the lake, "ein Anblick, der den Atem raubt" (a sight that takes your breath away). The Italian events page speaks of "una fantastica vista sul Lago Maggiore", and the site's closing line invites guests to enjoy the view over the lake "fino all'Italia" (all the way to Italy).
The events page says: "Il nostro ristorante, recentemente rinnovato, con la sua magnifica terrazza può ospitare fino a 110 persone" (our recently renovated restaurant, with its magnificent terrace, can host up to 110 people). That is the one capacity figure on the site, and it covers the restaurant and terrace together, so couples should ask how many can sit inside if the weather turns.
Weddings and Other Events
The events page, "Occasioni ed eventi", lists matrimonio (wedding), banchetto (banquet), battesimo (christening), festa di famiglia (family party) and funerale (funeral), as well as conferences and family events. A news post on the homepage repeats the offer in German: "Euer Event im da Peo! Ob Hochzeit, Geburtstag, Firmenevent oder Kochevent. Wir beraten Sie gerne!" (your event at da Peo, whether a wedding, a birthday, a company event or a cooking event; we are glad to advise you). The events page closes with an offer of advice without obligation and a personalized quote.
Two details matter for a wedding. First, the grotto opens outside its normal hours for events: "Siamo inoltre lieti di aprire al di fuori del nostro orario di apertura regolare per le vostre occasioni o eventi" (we are also glad to open outside our regular opening hours for your occasions or events). Second, it does close to the public for weddings. A notice on the homepage says the grotto will be closed all day for à la carte guests on Saturday 19.09.2026 because of a wedding or private event. So exclusive use of the whole restaurant is possible, at least on some dates.
The site does not describe a ceremony on site and does not offer a civil ceremony. A couple planning a symbolic ceremony on the terrace should ask whether that can be arranged.
The Kitchen
The food is the other reason to come. The homepage names Florian Nolting-Alves da Costa as the experienced restaurateur behind the kitchen. It says he learned from the best ("lernte von den Besten"), has been a candidate for a Michelin star, and had earned 15 points in the Gault Millau guide. The cooking mixes traditional Ticino and international cuisine, "frisch zubereitet, kreativ interpretiert und mit Liebe zum Detail serviert" (freshly prepared, creatively interpreted and served with attention to detail).
The menu page lists a lunch and afternoon menu, an evening tasting menu (Genuss Menü am Abend), an evening à la carte menu and a wine list, though it does not show dishes or prices. The News section adds a Wine & Dine lunch on Saturday 31.10.26 with Settemaggio, a winery from Monte Carasso that the grotto describes as recognized by Gault Millau; a Ticino evening with live music on the second Wednesday of every month; and cooking classes from the autumn. Guests are also invited to rate the grotto on Falstaff. The homepage heads its story "Eine Geschichte mit Herz" (a story with heart) and has a Team section, useful for a couple who want to know who will be cooking before they plan the menu.
Opening Hours and Seasons
The site gives these hours:
- High season, mid-March to the end of October: Tuesday 14.30 to 23.00, Wednesday to Saturday 11.00 to 23.00, Sunday 11.00 to 17.00, closed on Mondays.
- Low season, November to 3 January: Friday and Saturday 11.00 to 22.00, Sunday 11.00 to 16.30.
- Company holidays: 4 January to 14 March.
Warm dishes are served on Tuesday from 14:30 to 16:15 and 17:45 to 20:30, Wednesday to Saturday from 11:30 to 16:15 and 17:45 to 20:30, and on Sunday from 11:30 to 14:45, with a Ticino platter until 15:45.
These are the public hours. For a wedding the more important line is the promise to open outside them. A couple planning an evening dinner should confirm how late the kitchen will cook and how long the party can run, and couples looking at a date between January and mid-March should ask directly, since the grotto is on holiday then.
Getting There
The site lists a Shuttlebus with the same number as the reservation line, +41 91 791 70 00. It does not describe the route, the pick-up points or the price, and it gives no directions, parking information or nearest station. Guests flying in should ask the grotto how the shuttle works for a wedding party and where to stay, since the site mentions no rooms.
Language and Contact
The site is published in German and Italian. It does not say whether the team works in English, so an English couple should ask in the first message. Inquiries and reservations go to +41 91 791 70 00 or osteria@grotto-da-peo.ch.
What Stays Open
The site publishes no wedding menus, prices, minimum spend, deposit or cancellation terms. It does not say how many guests fit inside without the terrace, whether music or dancing is possible, or what the shuttle costs.
Who It Suits
Osteria Grotto da Peo suits couples who want a wedding meal where the food matters as much as the view, for up to 110 guests on a terrace above Lake Maggiore, with the possibility of having the whole grotto to themselves. It is a natural fit for a small to mid-sized wedding in spring, summer or early autumn.
It suits less well a wedding over 110, a party that needs a large dance floor, or a date in the grotto's winter holiday.
