Y-Jazz Quartet

Tap a star to rate

Y-Jazz Quartet is a Geneva jazz band that presents itself on the Swiss music platform mx3.ch as available for weddings, birthday parties and corporate events. Bookings go through its pianist, Marc Ueter. The band's biography is written in English and opens by addressing couples directly: "WELCOME, you are looking for a jazz Band for the reception of your wedding / birthday party in Geneva, Switzerland?" It then asks them to call and "ask for Mr. Marc Ueter, jazz pianist at the Y-Jazz Quartet Jazz Band". There is no separate website; the mx3 page is the band's shop window.

How the booking works

The biography makes one point twice that matters for a couple: "Marc will arrange for you the jazz band you need for the party!" and "Marc will be very pleased to set up your jazz band for your party." In other words, Marc Ueter is the contact who puts the band together for each event, rather than a fixed four-piece that always turns up in the same form. The page does not name the other musicians or give a standard line-up beyond the quartet in the band's name, so a couple should ask who will play and on which instruments.

Contact is by phone on +41 79 569 21 92 or by email at marc.ueter@bluewin.ch, and the mx3 page also has an email button and a "Book this band!" link.

The music

The band's own headings describe the sound as "Latin, Funk, Jazz, Blues, Soul", with track titles that advertise "FUNKY JAZZ" and "CLASSIC JAZZ". The biography is more specific about styles: "Traditional Mainstream Jazz, Swing, Bebop, Cool jazz, Blues, Boogie-Woogie, Bossanova, famous classical music turned into jazz style etc." That range covers what a wedding usually asks of a jazz band: standards and bossa for the aperitif, a quieter swing or cool jazz set under dinner, and blues or boogie-woogie if the party wants something livelier. The page lists 15 tracks and 2 playlists to listen to, which is the way to judge the sound before calling.

Where the band plays

The biography sets out a wide area. It says jazz musicians are available for concerts, parties and corporate events "in the Geneva - Lausanne - Vevey - Montreux area", in the Swiss Alps, naming hotels and clubs in Gstaad, Zermatt, Villars, Leysin and Verbier, in the Lucerne area, in Zurich, Davos and Saint-Moritz, and in Ticino "in the Locarno - Ascona - Lugano area". It ends with an invitation to couples planning a party "in one of the enchanting Swiss Castle, or in a typical Swiss Chalet" to think jazz and call Marc.

The gigs tab lists 6 dates, all from 2006 and 2007: Yverdon-les-Bains, Gampel Jeizinen in the Valais, the Salle de l'Arboretum in Aubonne, the Institut de Lavigny and two dates at the market in Villars. Those are the only performances on the page, so the page does not show recent engagements. The page counts 119852 visits and 13676 plays.

A second page from the same contact

Marc Ueter also runs a second mx3 page, for the Bellevue Jazz Quartet, with the same phone number and email. That page is in French and English and offers jazz for banquets, weddings and receptions in Geneva hotels and restaurants, lounge-style background music, cocktail and gala evenings, a jazz cruise on Lake Geneva, and a very long list of towns across Vaud, the Valais, Fribourg, Neuchâtel and the Jura where the band will play. Its biography lists jazz swing, mainstream, lounge blues, bebop and cool jazz, "idéal pour jouer soft pendant les apéritifs, cocktails, réceptions, dîners", ideal for playing softly during aperitifs, cocktails, receptions and dinners. Its 7 tracks carry titles such as "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Four Miles Davis", the latter labeled for a wedding on a cruise boat on Lake Geneva. For a couple, the practical point is that both pages lead to the same person, who arranges the band.

Where jazz fits in the day

Read together, the 2 pages point to the moments this kind of band is built for: the aperitif after the ceremony, a cocktail reception and dinner, played softly enough for guests to talk. Neither page mentions ceremony music or a first dance, and neither describes a late-night dance set. A couple who want jazz at the aperitif and dinner and a DJ or party band afterwards can use the band for the first half of the evening and ask Marc Ueter whether the musicians can also play a first dance before handing over.

Language

Here the English is on the page itself. The biography, the booking invitation and the list of regions are written in English, and the second page switches between French and English. A couple from abroad can call or email in English with some confidence that the message will be understood, although the page does not say which languages the other musicians speak on stage.

What the page does not settle

The mx3 page publishes no prices, no set lengths and no travel costs, which matters given the distances in the stated area, from Geneva to Davos or Lugano. It does not say whether the band brings its own sound system and piano or needs the venue to provide them, which is a real question for a jazz pianist at a chalet or castle. There are no reviews, no named venues from past weddings and no gigs listed after 2007. It is also unclear from the page whether the quartet can include a singer. All of this belongs in the first call.

Who it suits

Y-Jazz Quartet suits couples who want live jazz for a wedding reception, especially in Geneva, along Lake Geneva or at an alpine resort, and who would like to deal with a single contact in English. The style list is broad enough to cover a relaxed aperitif and a swinging dinner. The caveats are the thin page: no prices, no named line-up and no recent gig history, so a couple should ask for recent references and a recording of the actual musicians. Couples wanting a dance band to play current pop until late should look for a different kind of act; the page presents Y-Jazz as a jazz group through and through.
