1908 Catering

1908 Catering's page for catering on private jets and yachts makes a plain claim: "Whether in the air or on the water, for business or pleasure, our premium catering service maintains the quality of menu and service of a fine dining restaurant." Read the whole page and one word is missing. Wedding never appears on it. That gap is worth naming before anything else, because it is exactly what a couple should check before assuming this is a packaged wedding extra. 1908 does not sell "catering for your wedding on a yacht" as a named product. What it sells is a company-wide tier of premium add-ons, chef at home, catering on jets and yachts, a hot air balloon tasting, and a shortlist of rare ingredients, and its own homepage places that tier directly beneath the pitch for corporate events, private events and weddings, introduced with one line: "Discover also our luxury services." Nothing on the site rules out booking the yacht option for a wedding weekend. Nothing spells it in either. The honest reading is that it sits alongside the wedding line rather than inside it, and a couple drawn to it should ask directly at the enquiry stage.
A brand that is older than the company
1908 Catering is the trading name of 1908 Group SA, based in Manno, just outside Lugano. The company's own history page traces a specific origin: the brand was born in 2015 inside FC Lugano, the city's football club, to run catering for the players and for matchday food and drink at the Cornaredo stadium. FC Lugano itself was founded on 28 July 1908, which is where the brand's year actually comes from. It commemorates the football club's founding, not the catering company's, a detail the site never spells out but that its own history page and Wikipedia's record of the club agree on independently.
The stadium contract and the "1908 Catering" name transferred to a newly formed company, 1908 Group SA, in 2019. The football relationship then ran for several more seasons before ending. A press release still live on 1908's own blog states that the stadium catering mandate ran through 30 June 2022, closing what it calls the last 7 seasons working with the club, and it adds a detail the about-us page leaves out entirely: FC Lugano SA had been a shareholder in 1908 Group SA, and only exited that shareholding in February 2022, months after the club itself changed to new American ownership in the summer of 2021. From 2023 the company describes itself as having planted its headquarters at the Suglio Business Center in Manno, the address on every page today, coordinating its outlets across Ticino from there. It is run by 2 named people, Carlalberto Natale, sole director and cofounder, and Michele Montenegro, cofounder.
What the premium tier actually includes
The jet and yacht page describes 2 service levels: a full crew, chef, maître and hostess, who travel with the client, or a lighter option where the food is prepared and delivered before departure with the onboard staff briefed on serving it. The copy promises a menu adaptable to any diet, staff able to communicate in several languages without naming which ones, and what it calls "utmost confidentiality", phrasing aimed at people who would rather not be recognised mid-meal.
Chef at home, a separate page branded "1908 Home dining", covers everything from breakfast and brunch to a full dinner service, with the same option to add a maître and one or more waiters, and a wine list the company says runs from prestigious labels to a few genuine rarities. Of these, the hot air balloon page is the most concrete, because it names an outside partner rather than describing 1908's own staff: the flights themselves are run by Balloon Team SA, with 1908 supplying the food and wine served once the balloon is airborne. The page's own opening question, half marketing copy and half a real clue to who actually books it, asks whether the reader wants "your proposal to be magical", putting a marriage proposal, not a wedding day itself, at the centre of that particular pitch.
A fourth premium page lists specific ingredients rather than a general promise of quality: Alba white truffle, Almas caviar, Yubari king melon, Densuke black watermelon, Elvish honey, and Maitake or Matsutake mushrooms. The company says some of these carry a long wait between order and delivery, sourced through direct relationships with international producers rather than a general food-service wholesaler.
The wedding page itself
Away from the premium tier, the dedicated wedding page reads closer to what most Swiss caterers offer: a wedding planner on staff, restaurant-style set-up for the reception, entertainment and music, help finding a location. There is some range in tone. An outdoor wedding and a barbecue with entertainment sit next to the more expected fairytale-atmosphere evening. One line is worth quoting exactly because of what it does not claim: "Even a civil wedding can be original and magical." 1908 never says who performs a ceremony or where a Swiss marriage becomes legally valid, and it has no reason to. It is a caterer, not a venue or an officiant, and the sentence is about styling a reception, nothing more.
Where 1908 actually cooks
1908 does not own a wedding venue of its own. Instead, its location page recommends a working shortlist of Ticino spaces it partners with, each tagged with what the site itself thinks it suits. Villa Negroni, an eighteenth-century villa in Vezia with its own outdoor courtyard, is tagged for weddings alongside companies and private events. The Palazzo dei Congressi in central Lugano carries the same tag, and 1908's own 2022 press release states the company is one of 8 official catering suppliers approved for that venue and its associated locations, a more concrete claim than most caterers make about access to a specific hall. Ex Asilo Ciani, a building with 7 side rooms around a 284-square-metre central hall, is tagged for weddings too, and so is Tenuta Vallombrosa, a working wine estate where the site names 2 actual contacts, Elisa and Alberto, for a customised proposal. Not every partner venue carries the wedding tag: Suglio 1908, the self-service hall inside the company's own headquarters, is listed for corporate events only, and so is the LAC arts centre in Lugano.
A company that feeds far more than weddings
1908's public face runs well past weddings and premium extras. The company runs 2 self-service restaurants of its own: Suglio 1908, inside its own headquarters building, seats 380 people indoors and another 110 outside, and a second, in Cadempino, called La Cantinetta and styled on a Ticino grotto, seats 116 indoors and 20 outside. Neither is a wedding venue. They exist to explain how a company this size stays busy on an ordinary Tuesday. A downloadable sample menu on the site's own dishes page shows a similar range: a standing-style menu of composed dishes, a beef tartare with hazelnut mayonnaise, a red prawn from Mazara del Vallo, a cuttlefish-ink polenta vol-au-vent, sits in the same file as 2 dated menus branded "Artisa VIP Lounge" for HC Lugano ice hockey fixtures, one dated 2 December 2020 against EHC Biel-Bienne and the other 9 October 2020 against EV Zug. It is a second sports connection, ice hockey hospitality this time, quite separate from the FC Lugano football story that gave the brand its name.
Who this actually suits
A couple who wants a fairly conventional Ticino wedding, a planner on staff, a shortlist of tagged partner venues, dietary flexibility including full vegan and vegetarian options, gets a caterer whose track record already runs to a football stadium contract and an ice hockey VIP lounge alongside venues like Villa Negroni and the Palazzo dei Congressi. A couple drawn specifically by the jet, yacht or hot air balloon pages should go in with the honest picture: those read as a general premium tier open to any client rather than a packaged wedding add-on, so the practical step is to ask directly whether the crew, the timing and the menu can be built around a wedding day rather than treated as a one-off charter or a proposal flight. Nothing on the site publishes a price for any of this, which is true of nearly every Swiss wedding vendor and is not, on its own, a reason for concern. What is worth confirming before booking is language: the multilingual promise on the jet and yacht page never names English specifically, even though every page of the site itself is translated into English throughout. A couple planning from abroad should ask in writing which language the crew and the day-of coordination will actually run in, rather than assume the English website settles it.
