Dorf Cafe is a café on Rigistrasse in Baar, in the canton of Zug, that has been in business since December 1994 and runs a catering and party service alongside its daily menus. Its catering page names weddings among the occasions it caters, for groups of 10 to about 200 people, delivered in canton Zug and the neighboring cantons.
The catering offer
The catering page opens with a list of occasions it likes to cater: birthdays, weddings (Hochzeiten), parties, apéros, general assemblies, company dinners and family parties, with cold, warm, savory, spicy or sweet food for 10 to about 200 people ("ca. 200 Personen").
The team says it follows your ideas completely, offering cold, warm, sweet or mixed dishes as you wish. The formats are set out in one line: "Buffet, Tellerservice oder Showkochen, mit oder ohne Bedienung", a buffet, plated service or live cooking, with or without service staff. That last choice matters for a wedding budget. With staff, the café runs the service; without, the couple or the venue has to organize serving and clearing.
Where it delivers, and help with a venue
The café delivers to your home or to a place of your choice. The page then asks whether you have found a room for your party yet, and says the team will support your search and has options to offer. Delivery covers canton Zug and the cantons around it ("den uns umliegenden Kantonen").
For a couple who do not know the area, that offer of help with a venue is the most useful line on the page. The site does not name the rooms it has in mind, so ask what kind of spaces and sizes they are.
The food
The page gives an extract from its range, and says the team is happy to create baked goods, desserts or whole buffets to order:
- Blätterteiggebäck (puff pastry)
- Gefüllte Meterbrote (filled meter-long loaves, a Swiss party classic)
- Fleisch- und Käseplatten (meat and cheese platters)
- Dessertbuffet
- Reispfannen and Nudeleintöpfe (rice pans and noodle stews)
The only customer comment on the page is about a company Christmas dinner, for which the customer booked "das weit bekannte Fondue Chinoise" (the well-known fondue chinoise). They praise hand-cut meat that was very fresh, homemade sauces that tasted excellent and were light, and above all "die super feinen Pommes frites" (the really fine fries), served alongside rice and many other trimmings. It is signed P.E. from Zug. Fondue chinoise, thin slices of meat cooked at the table in a shared pot of broth, is a sociable choice for a relaxed winter wedding dinner, and it is the dish this customer singles out.
Putting a wedding together
The pieces on the page map neatly onto a wedding day. The puff pastry, the filled Meterbrote and the meat and cheese platters are classic apéro food for the drinks after the ceremony, and they travel well to a garden, a hall or a church square. For the meal, the choice between a buffet, plated service and Showkochen, where a cook prepares dishes in front of the guests, sets the tone: a buffet keeps things relaxed and flexible, plated service feels more formal, and live cooking turns the kitchen into part of the entertainment. The dessert buffet can stand in for, or sit beside, a wedding cake from another supplier.
A practical way to approach the café is to describe the day in these terms in the first message: the apéro, the main meal, dessert, the number of guests, the place, and whether you want the café's staff to serve.
The café itself
The site shows a working café, described in its own page description as the Cafe-Bäckerei Dorfplatz (café and bakery), with daily lunch menus, takeaway ordering online and table reservations. The menu page for the day shown lists three dishes at CHF 18.00, 20.50 and 30.50, with a salad plate with pork schnitzel at CHF 24.50 or veal schnitzel at CHF 29.50, and a soup at 6.00 except in the summer months. It notes that, unless stated otherwise, the café uses Swiss meat and Swiss bread, and that questions about allergens are answered on site or by phone.
The café is open Monday to Friday from 06.30 to 17.00, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 07.00 to 12.00. It is closed on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 2 January. The events page mentions a board game flea market held outdoors on the café's terrace.
The site also cites the saying the team has lived by since December 1994, from Ernst Penzoldt: humor is the ability to stay cheerful when things get serious. Not a bad motto for a wedding caterer.
Contact
For catering, the page asks you to get in touch by email at info@dorfcafe.ch or by phone on 079 441 74 15 so the team can advise you, and there is a contact form on the same page. The café's own number is 041 760 65 64, and the address is Rigistrasse 171a, 6340 Baar.
What the site leaves open
The site publishes no catering prices or packages, no lead time, and nothing on drinks, tableware or furniture. It does not say how far into the neighboring cantons the team will go, or what the cost of service staff is. It is written in German and says nothing about English, so a couple writing from abroad should ask about language in their first email.
Who it suits
Dorf Cafe suits couples marrying in and around Zug who want a friendly local caterer rather than a large events company, and who like hearty, familiar food: filled party loaves, platters, rice pans and the fondue chinoise. The flexibility on format and service, and the help with finding a room, make it practical for a family-style wedding at home, in a hall or in a rented space.
The caveats are that the catering page is brief, with no sample menus or prices, and that planning happens in German. For a couple who want to taste before booking, lunch at the café in Baar is an easy first step.
