Restaurant Tapéo Ziegelhof Liestal

Tap a star to rate

Restaurant Tapéo Ziegelhof Liestal is a Spanish tapas and specialty restaurant in the historic Brasserie Ziegelhof building on Zeughausplatz, in the old town of Liestal in Basel-Landschaft, run by Tapéo GmbH. Its catering page lists weddings among the occasions it serves and offers to cater "bei Ihnen, bei uns oder Ihrer Wunsch-Location": at the couple's home, at the restaurant, or at a venue of their choice. For a couple who wants a Spanish wedding meal of tapas and paella rather than a Swiss or French banquet, it is a distinctive option in the Basel area.

The catering offer

The catering page is short. It opens with "Wir feiern mit Ihnen die Feste wie sie fallen!" (we celebrate every occasion with you as it comes) and lists birthdays, weddings, christenings, anniversaries, Christmas dinners and business events. The key sentence describes the formats: "Wir richten für Sie Ihren Apéro, Stehlunch oder feierlichen Anlass mit viel iberischem Flair und spanischen Köstlichkeiten wie kalten und warmen Tapas, Paella sowie traditionellen Spezialitäten aus." In English: an apéro, a standing lunch or a festive occasion with plenty of Iberian flair and Spanish specialties such as cold and warm tapas, paella and traditional dishes.

For a wedding, those three formats map neatly onto the day. An apéro of tapas after the ceremony, a standing lunch for a smaller or daytime celebration, or a festive dinner built around paella and Spanish specialties. The page says the restaurant menu gives a good overview of the range, and it invites couples to ask for a non-binding quote, "ein unverbindliches Angebot für Ihren spanischen Event".

What the kitchen cooks

The menu page describes cold and warm tapas, Mediterranean salads, soups, fish, seafood and meat platters, the paellas, traditional specialties and well-known desserts. It is organized into separate cards: a vegetarian card with dishes made from fresh ingredients, a card of soups and meat dishes, a card of fish, shellfish, seafood and salads, a winter card of Spanish specialties for the cold season, and a card of Iberian menus, specialties and desserts. Drinks are split into cava, rosé and white wines, and red wines from different regions of Spain. The restaurant also runs a wine shop (Weinhandel) and a take-away service, both linked from the navigation.

The vegetarian card is useful for a mixed guest list, and the winter card suggests a menu for a cold-season wedding that is more than a summer paella. The dishes themselves sit in the linked menu cards rather than in the page text. The catering page closes with a gallery headed "Impressionen Catering Events", photos of past catering jobs, which is the best visual guide to how the buffets and platters are presented.

A taste of how they cater

The events page gives a sense of how the kitchen handles groups. Every Monday from 18.00 to 21.00 the restaurant sets up a large tapas buffet, cold and warm, with fish, meat and vegetarian dishes and a dessert buffet with a chocolate fountain, at Fr. 36.50 per person. During Liestal's Fasnacht carnival it runs an outdoor stand in front of the restaurant with drinks and food, and for the Schnitzelbank evening it serves a set menu with entry at Fr. 68.00 per person. None of this is a wedding price, but the Monday buffet in particular shows the buffet format the restaurant already runs every week, which is close to what a tapas wedding buffet would look like.

The restaurant and its setting

The about page calls Tapéo "ein kulinarisches Kleinod in Liestal", a culinary gem, and welcomes guests with "Bienvenidos al Tapeó" into "den historischen Gemäuern der Brasserie Ziegelhof", the historic walls of the Brasserie Ziegelhof, in the middle of the old town. It says the restaurant brings guests into an Iberian world where quality of life, hospitality and food come first. The contact page mentions both the restaurant and a terrace.

For a smaller wedding, a rehearsal dinner or a welcome evening for guests arriving from abroad, the restaurant itself is one of the three places the catering page offers. The site does not state how many guests the restaurant or terrace seats, or whether it can be booked exclusively.

Contact, hours and access

The address is Restaurant Tapeó, Brasserie Ziegelhof, Zeughausplatz 15, CH-4410 Liestal. For catering, the page asks couples to phone 061 922 05 95 from Monday to Saturday between 14.00 and 17.00. The contact page also has an email link and an online booking tool for table reservations. The restaurant is open Monday from 17.00 to 24.00, and Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 24.00.

For guests arriving by car, the contact page names public parking around Zeughausplatz and at the Parkplatz Allee. It says nothing about the station or public transport, so guests coming by train should check the route themselves.

What the site does not settle

  • Language. The site is in German, with a few Spanish greetings ("Hola y Que tal!"). It does not say whether the team works in English or Spanish, so a couple from abroad should ask.
  • Prices. There are no catering prices, only the quote. The Monday buffet and event menus give the restaurant's price level.
  • Guest numbers. No minimum or maximum is given, for the restaurant or for outside catering.
  • Service and equipment. The page does not say whether staff, tableware, setup and clearing are part of outside catering.
  • Terms. Deposit, cancellation and lead time are not stated; the footer links to the AGB, the general terms.

Who it suits

Tapéo suits couples marrying in or around Liestal and the Basel region who want the relaxed, sociable style of Spanish food: tapas passed around at the apéro, a paella at the center of the evening, cava and Spanish wines on the tables. It can work at the restaurant for a smaller wedding or a welcome dinner, and at a separate venue for a larger one. The vegetarian and winter cards help with mixed guest lists and a wedding outside summer.

The caveats are practical. Contact for catering is by phone in a short afternoon window, 14.00 to 17.00, from Monday to Saturday, which is awkward from another time zone, so the email link on the contact page is the better first step from abroad. The site is German only, and a couple will need a conversation to learn what the catering includes beyond the food.
