Yak Thaï Bistro
Tap a star to rate
Yak Thaï is a Thai restaurant at Rue de la Maladière 16 in Neuchâtel that also caters private events, weddings among them. Its catering page offers three levels of service, from dishes collected at the restaurant to a team that sets up and presents the food at the event, and every quote is built around the client's budget, guest numbers and setting. For a couple who want a Thai meal rather than a classic Swiss wedding menu, it is a specific and unusual option in the region.
Who runs it
The "A propos" page says the bistro was started by two friends with a passion for food and travel («deux amis passionnés de gastronomie et de voyages (qui ne l'est pas?)», two friends passionate about gastronomy and travel, and who isn't?). They write that they were born with the cooking of their parents and grandparents in their blood, and that they bring the passion of their family recipes to Neuchâtel. The restaurant describes its setting as a chic, trendy bistro and its atmosphere as friendly and enchanted.
The menu changes regularly. Alongside the classics, the owners say they always add a new touch and something that reminds them of «la cuisine de notre maman en Thaïlande», their mother's cooking in Thailand. The page ends with an open invitation: «Venez comme vous êtes!» (come as you are). The owners are not named on the site.
The catering offer
The catering page opens with the occasions it serves: a special occasion, a wedding, a birthday, or simply an evening with family and friends. It says the private catering service takes into account every specific of the event: the budget, «petit ou grand» (small or large), the quantity, the setting, and whatever the client wants to achieve. There is no fixed wedding package; the menu and service are put together per event.
The three service options are set out clearly.
Option 1, traiteur à l'emporter (takeaway). The dishes are cooked and ready to collect at the restaurant. They are prepared in serving dishes, and the equipment can be returned by appointment. Disposable cutlery, napkins and similar items can be added for a supplement on request.
Option 2, livraison traiteur (delivery). The dishes are cooked and ready to serve, and the team lays everything out on site. The food comes in serving dishes with a heating system, and the team collects the equipment afterward by appointment. Disposables are again available for a supplement.
Option 3, traiteur complet (full catering). As with delivery, the food arrives ready to serve with heating and the team sets it out, but here the team also stays on site during the event for the setup and the presentation. For this option the page asks clients to get in touch with questions and for a quote.
For a wedding, the difference between options 2 and 3 matters. With delivery, the food arrives hot and arranged, but once the team leaves, the couple or the venue handles the rest. With full catering, the team is present during the event. The page describes that presence as setup and presentation; it does not describe table service, clearing or cleanup, so a couple should ask exactly what the team does during the reception and when it leaves.
How to get a quote
The page gives two routes: an email to yakthai.ch@gmail.com or the contact form on the catering page. The form is bilingual, labeled in French and English throughout ("Demande de devis / Request a quote"), and asks for name, email, phone number, the date and time of the event, the approximate number of people and the approximate budget per person, plus a message. All fields are required. The restaurant says it replies «dans les meilleurs délais», as soon as possible. The phone number, 032 725 66 15, is printed in the header and footer.
Asking for a per-person budget up front is useful for a couple from abroad: it means the first reply should already be pitched at the right level rather than starting from a generic menu.
Language and location
The site has an FR/EN switch in its header, and the quote form is written in both languages, which makes a first contact in English straightforward. The body text of the pages is in French. Whether the team handles a whole wedding planning conversation in English is not stated, so it is worth asking in the first message.
The address is Rue de la Maladière 16, 2000 Neuchâtel. The site does not describe access, parking or public transport. For takeaway, someone has to collect the food at the restaurant, so a couple marrying outside Neuchâtel should consider option 2 or 3.
Opening hours
The restaurant is open every day. Monday to Friday it serves from 11h30 to 14h and 18h00 to 22h, Saturday from 12h00 to 15h00 and 18h00 to 22h, and Sunday evening from 18h00 to 21h30. Tasting the food at the bistro before booking is the obvious way to decide, and it is easy to do on almost any day of the week.
What the site does not settle
The site publishes no prices and no sample catering menus; everything goes through a quote. It gives no minimum or maximum number of guests for catering, and says nothing about the largest event the team has served. It does not say how far the team will deliver or travel, so a wedding outside the Neuchâtel area needs a direct question. It does not mention vegetarian or vegan dishes, allergies or spice levels on the catering page, which is worth raising for a mixed wedding crowd. There are no testimonials or wedding photos on the pages, and no mention of drinks, staff for table service, or tableware beyond the serving dishes and optional disposables.
Who it suits
Yak Thaï suits couples marrying in or near Neuchâtel who want Thai food at the center of their reception, a relaxed buffet style rather than a formal plated dinner, and a small independent kitchen that tailors the menu to the budget. The bilingual quote form lowers the barrier for couples who do not write French.
It suits less well a couple who need a full-service caterer that also staffs the tables, clears and supplies china and glassware. The options on the page stop at setup and presentation, so plan the rest (tableware, service staff, drinks) with the venue or another supplier, and confirm guest numbers and travel before relying on it for a large wedding.
