A Lucerne confiserie since 1957

HEINI Luzern describes itself as a café, bakery, Conditorei and Confiserie that has been making baked goods, cakes and chocolate in Lucerne since 1957. Its range runs to around 600 products, from classics made to traditional recipes to its own creations, and it lists five locations in Lucerne and Zug, each with a shop and a café: HEINI Falkenplatz, HEINI Löwenplatz, HEINI Pflanzcafé and HEINI Bahnhof in Lucerne, and TREICHLER in Zug. The company is HEINI Conditorei AG, Löwenplatz 9, 6004 Luzern. The site's About section includes pages on its milestones since 1957, its awards, and one titled "180 Persönlichkeiten", 180 personalities, which gives an idea of the size of the team.

For weddings, HEINI has a dedicated wedding cake page, a wedding cake brochure and a category of cake toppers for weddings in its online shop. For a couple marrying in Lucerne, it is an established city institution with a clear path to ordering a wedding cake.

How a wedding cake is ordered

The wedding cake page invites couples to "Verzaubern Sie Ihre Hochzeitsgäste mit einer feinen und hübschen Hochzeitstorte aus unserer Meisterkonditorei", to delight their guests with a fine and pretty wedding cake from its master pastry kitchen. It promises cakes that taste as good as they look, made like all its products with first-class ingredients.

The process is spelled out. HEINI offers a personal consultation at its main shop on Falkenplatz in Lucerne, where couples can look at the large selection of cakes at their leisure and perhaps taste a piece or two. To make sure the staff can set aside enough time, couples fill in a contact form first, and the team then gets back to them promptly to arrange an appointment. For questions, the page gives the phone number 041 412 20 20. There is also a wedding cake brochure to download as a PDF (Hochzeitstorten-Prospekt), which is the place to look for designs and any prices before the meeting; the web page itself names none.

For a couple from abroad, that means one visit to Lucerne for the consultation, booked in advance through the form. Someone who cannot come in person should ask whether the consultation can be done by phone or email instead, since the page describes only the meeting at Falkenplatz.

Toppers and decoration

The online shop has a category called "Cake Topper Hochzeit", wedding cake toppers, next to the wedding cakes, so the topper can be ordered from the same place as the cake. The shop also sells a handwritten, personalized chocolate plaque (Tortendekor Handgeschrieben) with up to 12 letters and numbers for CHF 17.70, and candles, which gives an idea of the finishing touches on offer. The web pages do not describe the wedding toppers themselves.

The regional range

The rest of the shop is useful for favors, a dessert table or simply a taste of Lucerne. The Lozärner Rägetröpfli, fine chocolate drops filled with high-quality Chriesiwasser (cherry brandy) and truffle cream, are listed in the official inventory "Kulinarisches Erbe der Schweiz", the culinary heritage of Switzerland; a box of 9 costs CHF 22.40 and a box of 25 CHF 50.20. Because they contain cherry brandy, they suit adult guests, and the shop also sells Rosentau Tröpfli with two alcohol-free fillings. The Luzerner Birnenweggen is filled with cooked, finely chopped dried pears and plums, walnuts and "Grossmutters Gewürzmischung", grandmother's spice mix, and the Luzerner Lebkuchen is made with cream from the milk of cows on the Stanserhorn.

The cake range shows the house style: a Luzerner Festtagstorte with chocolate sponge, truffle cream, raspberry jam and nougat, a Luzerner-Kirsch-Rahmtorte with kirsch-soaked sponge and meringue, a Maron-Vermicelle cake with chestnut cream, a Truffe Grand Cru cake and a Chocolat-Princess cake. From the Zug sister brand comes the TREICHLER Zuger Kirschtorte, a protected (GGA) specialty of japonaise layers, cherry buttercream and sponge soaked in kirsch, at CHF 39.50 for 8 portions or CHF 27.50 for 4. These give a good idea of flavors to ask about for a wedding cake, though the wedding page does not list its own flavors.

Many of these are Rahmtorten, cream cakes, and the shop's own storage note is worth reading with a wedding in mind: the Schwarzwälder-Rahmtorte (CHF 55.00) keeps for 2 days refrigerated at 5 degrees Celsius. A cream-based wedding cake needs a cool place at the venue until it is cut, which is one more reason to settle transport and timing with HEINI in advance. The shop also sells gift vouchers (Gutscheine), a simple thank-you for helpers after the wedding.

Cafés and language

Every location has a café, and the home page presents HEINI as a meeting place for Lucerne, "Inbegriff grosser Kaffeekultur", the epitome of coffee culture. The Bahnhof location in Lucerne's station and the others in the city give visiting couples and guests an easy place to try the cakes before or after the consultation. The site is in German, and it does not say whether consultations can be held in English or another language.

What the site does not say

The wedding page gives no prices, sizes, tiers or flavors (the brochure may cover some of that), no lead time, and no information on delivery to a venue or set-up. It also says nothing about dietary requirements for wedding cakes. Couples should ask about all of these when they book the consultation, especially delivery if the wedding is outside Lucerne, and how early a wedding cake should be ordered in the high season.

Who it suits

HEINI Luzern suits couples marrying in Lucerne or nearby who want a wedding cake from a long-established local confiserie, want to see and taste cakes before choosing, and like the idea of Lucerne specialties such as Rägetröpfli as favors. The clear consultation process and the brochure make it straightforward to start.

The caveats are that the consultation takes place in person in Lucerne and that the web page itself is short on specifics. Couples who need prices or delivery terms before they travel should download the brochure and ask those questions in the contact form.
