Sutter Begg

Sutter Begg is a bakery in Basel that sells a large part of its range through an online shop. Its cake page, titled "Torten - Sutter Begg in Basel", sits inside a shop that also sells bread, apéro platters, sandwiches, pastries, pralines and gift vouchers. Four short claims run along the bottom of every page under "Unsere Vorteile" (our advantages): "Handmade - gönn ich mir" (handmade, I treat myself to it), "100 Jahre Erfahrung" (100 years of experience), "Immer frisch" (always fresh) and "Hygienestandards" (hygiene standards).

For a couple marrying in or near Basel, the interest is a bakery that can supply the wedding cake and the food around it, the apéro platters and breads, from one order. For a couple elsewhere in Switzerland, it is worth reading the delivery details closely before assuming a cake can travel.

How the cake shop is organized

The shop groups its cakes under "Torten" in 5 families, each with its own range page:

  • Torten, the standard cakes
  • Wunschtorte, cakes made to the customer's own wishes
  • Hochzeitstorten, wedding cakes
  • Party Cake
  • Fototorten, cakes printed with a photo

The menu adds a "Spezial" group and a "Happy Cake Konfigurator", a tool for putting a cake together online. The wedding cake range has its own link in the shop footer as well as in the menu, so it is a standing product line rather than something offered on request only. The general cake page, though, does not show the wedding cakes themselves, their designs, their sizes or their prices. You have to open the "Hochzeitstorten" range to see those, and a couple should do that before drawing any conclusion about cost.

The standard cakes and what they cost

The general cake page lists 23 products with prices, and they give a sense of the bakery's price level, though none of them is a wedding cake:

  • Baslertörtli, Früchtezauber-Torte, Himbeertorte (raspberry), Läggerli Torte, Schwarzwäldertorte (Black Forest) and Schwedentorte, 25 CHF each
  • Erdbeercrèmetorte and Erdbeertorte (strawberry), Sachertorte and Schoggicrèmetorte (chocolate cream), 45 CHF each
  • Fan Torte klein, 75 CHF, and Fan Torte gross, 105 CHF
  • Fototorte Klein, 72 CHF, and Fototorte Gross, 102 CHF
  • Party Cake klein (1000g), 72 CHF, and Party Cake gross (1900g), 102 CHF
  • Children's cakes (Clown, Löwe, Pirat, Smilie, Teddy) from 68 CHF to 85 CHF

Two small extras are useful for a wedding. A "Marzipanschild", a marzipan plaque for a message, costs 8.50 CHF. A "Torten-Aufleger A4 mit Foto (ohne Torte)", an A4 photo topper sold without the cake, costs 30 CHF, which could put a picture of the couple on a cake from another range.

The filter on the page marks 13 of the cakes as vegetarian. It says nothing about other diets on this page, so a couple with vegan, gluten-free or allergy questions for their guests should ask the bakery directly.

A word on the bakery's cakes

The one piece of prose on the cake page explains that the word Torte comes from the Italian "torta", once used for filled pies rather than pastries, and that most chocolate and cream cakes as we know them date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The bakery then says it did not simply copy those recipes: "unsere Konditoren haben unsere Torten über Jahrzehnte stetig weiterentwickelt, bis sie unseren Ansprüchen genügt haben" (our confectioners have kept developing our cakes over decades until they met our standards). It names the Leckerli cake as one example.

Apéro and bread for the reception

The shop's "Apéro" section is where the rest of a wedding reception could come from. It lists "Apéroplatten salzig & süss" (savory and sweet apéro platters), "Apérobrot" (apéro bread), Gugelhopf and "Bürohäppli" (office snacks), next to breads, rolls, sandwiches, savory tarts and salads. A separate "Events" link and a "Prospekte" (brochures) page sit in the main menu, and the footer has a link for quote requests ("Offertenanfragen") next to the contact form. The cake page itself does not describe any wedding catering service or package, so if you want the bakery to supply an apéro for your guests, the quote request is the way in.

Delivery and pickup

The footer lists 3 delivery methods:

  • Abholung in Filialen, pickup at a Sutter Begg branch
  • Sutter Begg Kurier, the bakery's own courier
  • Postversand, postal shipping

These apply to the shop as a whole, and not every product can use every method. On the cake page, the "Postversand" tag covers just 1 of the 23 cakes, the Läggerli Torte. Fresh cream cakes are not marked for postal shipping, and the page does not say where the courier delivers. A couple with a venue outside the Basel area should therefore not count on a wedding cake arriving by post, and should ask about courier range and cost, or plan for someone to collect the cake from a branch.

The shop has a "Lieferbedingungen" (delivery terms) page, a "Lieferung und Abholung" (delivery and pickup) page and a "Häufige Fragen" (FAQ) page, which are the places to check lead times and delivery conditions. The cake page also has an availability filter by weekday, which shows 22 of the cakes available Monday to Friday and all 23 on Saturday and Sunday.

Branches, contact and language

The branch list sits behind the "Filialen" and "Unsere Filialen" links. The cake page does not give branch addresses or opening hours, so check the branch nearest your venue before you plan a pickup.

Contact is by phone on +41 61 685 96 96, by the contact form, or by email, which the site writes as info(at)sutterbegg.ch (replace "(at)" with the @ sign). The bakery is also on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok, and runs a customer card, the "Sutter Card".

The shop is published in German only. The site does not say whether staff handle orders or questions in English, so a couple who do not read German should write their request simply and ask about language in the first message.

What to ask before ordering

Because the general cake page is silent on the wedding range, a couple should open the "Hochzeitstorten" page and then put these questions to the bakery: the prices and portion sizes of the wedding cakes, how far ahead they must be ordered, whether a tasting is possible, whether a design can be adapted through the "Wunschtorte" route, and whether the courier can reach the venue on the day. Couples who also want an apéro can send one quote request covering both.

Who it suits

Sutter Begg suits a couple marrying in or around Basel who want an established local bakery with a dedicated wedding cake range, published prices across its cake shop, and apéro food from the same place. For a venue further away, the delivery options need checking first.
