A German ring brand with a Swiss site

acredo is a wedding and engagement ring brand whose rings are designed around an online configurator and made in Germany, then fitted and sold through acredo locations and partners. Its Swiss website lists locations including Luzern, and it is the Luzern location that this listing points to. The Luzern page itself carries no address, phone number or opening hours, so the practical details of that showroom have to come from acredo directly.

All acredo products are made exclusively by the egf Manufaktur in Pforzheim, which the site calls its long-standing partner and one of the internationally leading wedding ring and jewelry specialists. The quality page credits the house with 80 years of experience. Pforzheim, the site reminds readers, has been the home of Germany's jewelry and watch industry since its founding under Margrave Friedrich of Baden in 1767. The collections are drawn by acredo's designer, Katharina Heubach.

The brand's philosophy page opens with a line about love: "die Liebe zweier Menschen zueinander wie auch unsere Liebe zum Produkt" (the love of two people for each other, and our love for the product). The practical meaning is that every ring is configured to the couple's own specification and made to order as a one-off, rather than picked from a tray.

How the configurator works

The heart of acredo is its configurator, which the site says its own IT team keeps developing so that the configuration options are as near to unlimited as possible. A couple chooses height, width, color, ring size, profile and stone setting. The profile is the cross-section of the band: straight, slightly or strongly domed, drawn inward, or a combination. The site says its qualified designers work on the mathematics of these shapes so that the inner, outer and side surfaces flow into one another, and it suggests trying the profiles in different widths at an acredo location to feel the difference.

The service page is honest that all this choice is also a burden. It says the configuration allows "unglaubliche Möglichkeiten" (incredible possibilities) but asks many decisions of the customer. Its answer is the sample ring. acredo makes silver-colored sample rings that match the chosen design in shape, width, height and ring size, so a couple can wear them before committing. Production of the samples takes about 14 days, the price of the samples can be credited against the final order, and extra details on a sample, such as joints, stone settings, surface finishes or a test engraving, cost extra. If the samples show that something should change, acredo says it will build the change into the order.

Engraving can be classic, with the wedding date and a partner's name inside the ring, or creative, with a couple's own drawing, even on the outside of the band.

Metals and quality

The production works on what the site calls a best-class principle and alloys and melts more than 30 precious metals itself. The range runs from gold through palladium to platinum. Gold is alloyed in yellow, white, gray, rose, red and green, and acredo says it holds patents for some of these alloys. The newest option is PlatinGold, which the site describes as a very white metal with a total precious-metal content of 97.3%, purer than platinum 950. acredo's own page adds that this gives it an allergy potential it rates as extremely low; that is the brand's claim, and anyone with a known metal sensitivity should raise it at the consultation.

Rings go through special hardening processes during manufacture. Hardness is measured in Vickers (HV), a method the site says was developed in 1925 at Vickers Ltd. in aircraft construction. acredo gives its alloys a range of 180 to 270 HV, with single-color rings as a rule a little harder than multi-color ones. The site is candid that even harder metal cannot prevent wear marks under heavy use.

On diamonds, acredo says it accepts only fine or very fine white, with small, very small or no inclusions visible under a 10x loupe, and that every diamond from 0.3 ct comes with a certificate from GIA, IGI or HRD. It adds that its best diamonds from 0.3 ct show a Hearts & Arrows pattern, which it says only 1% of brilliant-cut diamonds have. Every acredo piece is delivered in the brand's case, and wedding rings come with an extra small ring pouch.

Certification

The egf Manufaktur received what the site calls its "erste" (first) RJC certificate in March 2017. The RJC is an international association of gold and jewelry companies, founded in 2005, whose members commit to a code of practice covering business ethics, human rights, environmental and social responsibility. On top of that code, egf meets the RJC's Provenance Claim, which is not compulsory for members, and the site states that all precious metals come only from suppliers certified to the RJC chain-of-custody standard for gold and platinum metals. The same page lists a closed water circuit in the electroplating shop, solar power covering most of the electricity demand, and detailed product training for retailers.

acredo also states that the egf Manufaktur was the first wedding ring maker to receive the quality certificate of the jewelry technology institute of Hochschule Pforzheim.

Aftercare

The service page recommends visiting your acredo partner from time to time for a check and a professional clean, and a regular inspection of stones and settings, since settings can shift and a stone can be lost. For heavily worn rings, acredo offers professional refurbishment by its specialists at the Manufaktur, and it handles all ring-size changes, noting that resizing a plain single-color ring by one or two sizes is much simpler than changing a ring with a band of diamonds, which usually has to be remade. For home care, the case comes with a polishing cloth and, for wedding rings, a small sponge for restoring a matte finish.

What the site does not settle

The about, quality and service pages quote no ring prices. The footer states that all prices on the site include 8.1% VAT, and the final cost depends on metal, width, stones and finish, so a couple should work out a budget in the configurator or at the appointment. The only time the site gives is the roughly 14 days for sample rings; it does not state the lead time for the finished rings, which matters for a couple fixing a wedding date from abroad. And for Luzern specifically, the location page gives no address, phone number or hours. The Swiss site is in German, and it does not say whether consultations are held in English.

Who it suits

acredo suits couples who want to design their own rings within a clear system, who like the idea of wearing a sample for a while before committing, and who care about documented sourcing and certified diamonds. The configurator also makes it easy to start the design from abroad and finish it at a Swiss appointment.

It suits less well a couple in a hurry, since the sample stage alone takes around two weeks before the final order goes into production, or a couple looking for a single local goldsmith working at the bench in Switzerland. acredo is a German-made brand sold through locations, and the relationship is with the brand and its partner rather than with one craftsperson.
