Rhomberg Schmuck

Rhomberg Schmuck is a Swiss jewelry retailer with branches in several locations, an online shop and a strong focus on wedding and engagement rings. The site's banner reads "40 Jahre Rhomberg Schmuck" (40 years of Rhomberg Schmuck), and the wedding ring range runs from classic gold to palladium, platinum, tantalum, titanium, zirconium and carbon.

The wedding ring range

The wedding ring section (Eheringe) is organized by material, and each material gets its own short description on the site. It is one of the clearest ways into the range for a couple who have not yet decided what their rings should be made of.

  • Yellow gold (Gelbgold), described as the best-known and most popular precious metal, preferred by couples who hold to traditional values.
  • White gold (Weissgold), presented with clear forms and a purist design language.
  • Rose and red gold (Rosé- und Rotgold), a warm tone the site says is popular with women and men alike.
  • Bicolor, combining different gold tones in one ring.
  • Palladium, which the site calls an excellent alternative to platinum or white gold, offering similar qualities "zu einem oft attraktiveren Preis" (at an often more attractive price).
  • Platinum (Platin), described as one of the rarest precious metals, with a soft silvery white color the site says suits every skin type.
  • Tantalum (Tantal), a dark, heavy metal with a graphite-gray sheen, for couples looking for something out of the ordinary.
  • Titanium (Titan), which the site describes as sturdy, "antiallergen", extremely light and dark gray.
  • Zirconium (Zirkonium), which the site describes as biocompatible, very hard-wearing and "antiallergen".
  • Carbon, a high-tech material that can be worn pure or mixed with precious metals and diamonds.

The anti-allergy descriptions of titanium and zirconium are the retailer's own; a couple with a known metal allergy should raise it in the consultation. The site also says its wedding rings are made "aus recyceltem, RJC-zertifiziertem Gold" (from recycled, RJC-certified gold) in the description of its ring guide. The site does not spell out the abbreviation, and a couple for whom sourcing matters should ask what the certification covers.

Engagement rings have their own section, split into solitaire rings, pavé rings, tension rings (Spannringe), halo rings, memory rings, and stacking rings worn in front of or beside another ring (Vorsteck- und Beisteckringe). There is a ring guide for engagement rings as well.

The free consultation

The consultation page is the most useful part of the site for a couple planning ahead. It describes an "unverbindliche Beratung" (a consultation with no obligation) of "rund 90 Minuten" (around 90 minutes), and asks couples to plan 1 1/2 hours for a first meeting. The site says it wants to discuss the factors that matter when choosing wedding rings, naming "Proportion, Stil, Material und Farbe" (proportion, style, material and color), and describes its advice as based on "unserer langjährigen Erfahrung, grossem Fachwissen und freundlichem Service" (our many years of experience, great expertise and friendly service).

Appointments are requested through the site: couples say when suits them and the team replies. The page invites couples to visit "an einem unserer vielen Standorte" (at one of our many locations). The site has a page for its Thun branch, where it says couples can book a no-obligation appointment with its experts ("Expertinnen").

The ring guide and catalogs

Rhomberg sends printed guides by post, free of charge. The Ehering-Guide (wedding ring guide) gives an overview of wedding rings "für unterschiedliche Stile und Budgets" (for different styles and budgets) and includes a 200 CHF voucher. There is also a Verlobungsring-Guide for engagement rings and several other booklets, including one of highlights. For a couple living abroad, the guide is a way to browse the range at home before booking a visit, although the site does not say whether it ships the guides outside Switzerland. The shop's region selector lists only Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Services after the purchase

The service menu lists personal consultation, resizing (Grössenanpassung), refreshing and cleaning, engraving (Gravuren), vouchers, a guarantee, ear piercing and the purchase of old gold (Altgold-Ankauf). A "Wissen" section covers ring terms, how to measure ring size, diamonds, materials, alloys and care. There is also an "Atelier Rhomberg" entry in the jewelry menu, though the site's ring pages do not describe what the atelier does.

The site also hosts a long German-language wedding planning guide (Hochzeits-Ratgeber) covering ceremonies, budget, planning checklists and customs, and a page on wedding anniversaries. It is general reading rather than part of the ring service.

For the rest of the wedding party, the jewelry menu has sections for women, men and children, plus engraved jewelry. The men's page mentions pieces in stainless steel, gold, silver, titanium or tantalum, along with watches, bracelets, pendants, cufflinks and other accessories, which could help with a groom's gift or something for the best man. The Thun branch page lists earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets and rings among what the shop carries.

Language, contact and what the site leaves open

The site is in German only, and it does not say whether consultations are available in English. The main contact is the hotline, 071 775 99 77, shown at the top of every page.

  • Prices. The collection and consultation pages list no ring prices. The online shop is the place to check them.
  • Branch details. The Thun page's text gives no street address or opening hours, and the full list of branches sits on a separate Filialen page.
  • Lead times. There is nothing on how long a pair of wedding rings takes to order, size and engrave.
  • Delivery abroad. The shop's region options are Switzerland and Liechtenstein only.

Who it suits

Rhomberg suits couples who want to compare a very wide range of materials side by side, from gold and platinum to tantalum, zirconium and carbon, with a structured, no-obligation consultation to guide the choice. The free printed guide, the voucher and the online shop make it easy to start from home, and the chain's many locations mean couples living in Switzerland can pick a branch near them.

It is less suited to couples who want a single goldsmith designing a one-off ring, or who need to work in English, since the site gives no sign of English service. Couples coming from abroad should confirm the language and the branch before planning a visit around the 90-minute consultation.
