A jewelry house in Thun's old town

Frieden, trading as Frieden AG Creative Design, is a jewelry house at Obere Hauptgasse 37 in 3600 Thun, with its own goldsmith ateliers in the old town. Its history pages trace the business back to its founding in 1898 and a move from Langnau to Thun, then through a growth from retail into wholesale and new areas of expertise. The rings page presents a large catalog of diamond, solitaire, engagement and colored-stone rings from the house's own ateliers, and says one of its specialties is one-off pieces made in its goldsmith atelier, from CAD design to finished piece, with a great deal of handcraft in Thun.

A partner page on the wedding ring portal derTRAURINGjuwelier describes the house as a wedding ring specialist under the name "Frieden - since 1898," offering engagement rings, wedding rings and memoire rings, and says its team is devoted to contemporary design for the young and the young at heart.

The rings catalog

The rings page lists 132 pieces under the Frieden brand, almost all set with diamonds (119) and many with colored stones (67). The material filter shows white gold (105), red and rose gold (19) and yellow gold (9). The page's own framing is broad: whether an exclusive alliance ring to go with an existing wedding ring or a colored-stone ring with sapphire, emerald or ruby, there is something for every taste.

Prices are shown for most rings, which is useful for a couple judging the budget from abroad. The lowest price on the page is CHF 790 for a Bibi Balù ring, and many rings in the Liberty line sit between CHF 1,600 and CHF 3,500. Alliance rings, the classic eternity-style band that sits beside a wedding ring, run from CHF 3,250 for a bezel-set Alliance ring and CHF 3,710 for a pavé chain ring up to CHF 8,470 for a channel-set version. The Alliance Rivière line reaches CHF 45,000 at the top of the page. A few pieces, including the solitaire rings and some pearl rings, are marked price on request.

The collections carry names such as Starlight, Carmen, Jubilé, Liberty, Paradise, Wonderland, Diamond Design, Colour Design, Aladin, Rainbow, Evita, High Society, Twist of Time and a jubilee collection with Adele, Arabesque, Gatsby and Marquise designs. There is a Canadamark diamond line, and pearl rings in Akoya and Südsee pearls, with an Akoya ring at CHF 2,170 and a Südsee pearl ring at CHF 2,500. The Rainbow line runs from rings to a Rainbow 2.5 mm collier at CHF 40,300 for a couple who wants a statement piece for the day.

Craft and services

The site's navigation outlines what the house does beyond selling finished pieces: one-off commissions, reworking existing jewelry, repairs and engravings, expert reports and valuations, advice on inheritances and on insurance. A separate section covers the ateliers themselves, the path from design to jewel, tradition and innovation, and a commitment to training young craftspeople.

The house lists four professional memberships: the SSEF (Swiss Foundation for Gemstone Research), the SGG (Swiss Gemmological Society), GIA Alumni with Graduate Gemologists, and the VSGU (the association of Swiss goldsmith and watch retailers). The site also carries an extensive guide to colored stones, diamonds and the 4 C, gemology, certificates, gem investing and cultured pearls.

Thun as a wedding town

The partner page spends some time on Thun itself, and a couple from abroad may find it useful context. It describes the town at the lower end of Lake Thun as the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, with a castle from the 12th century above a late-medieval old town known for its raised sidewalks. It says Thun is the seat of the Oberland-West civil registry office and that couples come from around the world to marry in the region, and it names places where the page says a civil wedding can also take place, among them the Berghaus Rellerli, the Hotel Blausee and the castles of Oberhofen, Blankenburg, Spiez and Schadau. A couple should confirm any civil ceremony arrangements with the registry office itself, but the list shows why a Thun jeweler sees many wedding couples.

On rings, the same page makes a simple point: it is only the personal engraving that turns a ring into a traditional wedding ring, and engraving is one of the services the house lists.

Visiting and contact

The address is Obere Hauptgasse 37, 3600 Thun, phone +41 33 222 28 77, email contact@frieden.ch. The partner page gives opening hours of Tuesday to Friday, 10.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 18.00, and Saturday 10.00 to 16.00, and invites couples either to make an appointment or simply to drop in.

For couples from abroad

Frieden's site is in German only, and neither page says whether advice is given in English, so a couple who does not speak German should ask by email first.

What the site does not settle:

  • Plain wedding bands. The rings page is dominated by diamond and colored-stone rings; plain wedding bands are described on the partner page but not shown with prices on the house's own rings page.
  • Custom prices and lead times. One-off pieces from the atelier are a specialty, but the site gives no price guide or production time for them.
  • Shipping and remote work. Neither page says whether a design can be agreed remotely or whether pieces are sent abroad.

Who it suits

Frieden suits couples who want an established house with its own ateliers, a wide choice of diamond and colored-stone rings at published prices, and the option of a one-off piece designed in CAD and made by hand in Thun. It is also a natural stop for a couple looking for an alliance ring to wear beside a wedding band, or for jewelry to match on the day.

It suits less well a couple who wants a simple, low-cost pair of plain bands chosen online, since the online catalog leans toward stone-set rings, or a couple who needs English-language service confirmed in advance. The partner page lists no Monday or Sunday hours, which a couple on a brief visit to Thun should plan around.
