Galli, formally Galli Uhren Bijouterie AG, is a family-run watch and jewelry shop at Theaterstrasse 16, at Bellevue in central Zurich. Its website runs in English and German, and its ring pages list Meister wedding bands, engagement rings and memoire rings with prices in francs, which makes it easy to judge budget before a visit. Watches are the family's original trade, and the shop now describes itself as being in its fifth generation.
The family story
The About page is a detailed history. Paul Galli was born in Königsberg on December 2, 1859, trained as a watchmaker, and worked as an assistant across Germany and in North America before starting his own business. In 1882 he acquired a small watchmaker's shop on Oberdorfstrasse in Zurich, later moved to Tonhallenplatz, and in 1899 moved into the new building at Theaterstrasse 16, where the business remains today. The page tells how, at Tonhallenplatz, he set up shop as Horlogerie P. Galli between a cobbler and a cake shop, in a spot that was not yet part of downtown but had such a fine view that the square came to be called Bellevue, "beautiful view." It was also the first shop in which he could buy watches directly from the factory. The page follows the firm through Max Galli, the second generation, Bruno Galli, who joined in 1953, the difficult watch-crisis years steered by Nelly Galli, and Mario Galli, who entered the firm on July 1, 1983. On July 1, 2016, Marco Galli, son of Mario and Ruth Galli, joined after experience in watch retail and the Watch Sales Academy in Le Locle.
The wedding rings
The rings shown are from Meister, which the product pages describe as a wedding ring and jewelry manufactory founded in Zurich in 1897, now in its third generation as an owner-managed family business. According to those pages, Meister's precious metal alloys are specially developed and certified nickel-free, its wedding rings are made without exception from forged alloys of the highest hardness, and all its diamonds come from conflict-free sources and are tested in its own diamond laboratory.
The listed wedding bands give a good sense of the range, with prices per ring:
- Classic Wedding Ring in white gold at CHF 1,710 and CHF 2,050, and other Classics in white gold at CHF 2,700, CHF 3,545 and CHF 3,710
- Classics Wedding Ring in platinum at CHF 3,285, and a Classic Wedding Ring in platinum at CHF 8,640
- Classic Wedding Ring in red and white gold at CHF 3,250, and two-tone Classic rings at CHF 4,920
- Classic Wedding Ring in yellow gold from CHF 3,200
- Symbolics Wedding Ring in yellow gold at CHF 2,490, in white gold at CHF 3,300 and in red gold at CHF 4,495
- Phantastics Wedding Ring in red gold at CHF 4,185 and in white gold at CHF 5,160
- Individuals Wedding Ring in two tones at CHF 5,955
The same page shows Meister engagement rings in white gold from CHF 1,695, CHF 1,830 and CHF 2,280, and memoire rings from CHF 2,500. A line on the ring pages says that if a ring is not in stock, the shop will gladly organize it without obligation.
Paying in installments
Each ring page offers 0% financing through HeyLights: no down payment and no hidden costs, installments over up to 24 months, for buyers aged at least 18. The pages show example monthly rates, such as CHF 71.25 a month on the CHF 1,710 white gold ring and CHF 112.50 a month on a CHF 2,700 ring. The request form notes that the buyer's data will be used for a credit check.
Other services
Galli has its own watchmaking atelier, and the service pages cover watch winders, leather straps, and written appraisals of watches and jewelry, for example for insurance, a sale or an inheritance. The appraisal page lists what is taken into account: brand and origin, metal and purity, gemstones and market value. The site also carries a long watch glossary, a sign of how seriously the family takes the horological side.
Beyond the rings
Because Galli is first a watch shop, it can cover more than the rings. The site's menus lead to watches and to jewelry including bracelets, necklaces and earrings, so a couple can look for a wedding-day watch, a gift for a partner, or jewelry for the ceremony in the same place. A written appraisal from the shop may also be useful for a couple wearing inherited family pieces on the day. The site menu adds a team page introducing the people in the shop, a blog and a sale section, all worth a look before a visit. The service pages also say the family recommends having valuable pieces checked by experts from time to time to keep their value.
Visiting
The shop is at Theaterstrasse 16, at Bellevue, 8001 Zurich. The site names Zürich Bellevue as the nearest tram stop and Zürich Stadelhofen as the nearest train station, and gives the Opéra and Hohe Promenade car parks for drivers. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9 am to 6.30 pm and Saturday 9 am to 4 pm. The phone number is +41 44 262 04 10.
What the site does not settle
- Lead times. For rings that have to be ordered, the site does not say how long delivery takes, which matters when the wedding date is fixed.
- Engraving. The ring pages do not mention engraving or its cost.
- Language in the shop. The website is in English and German, but it does not say which languages the staff speak.
- Custom work. The offer shown is Meister's range; the site does not describe one-off designs made in-house.
Who it suits
Galli suits couples who want a central, easy-to-reach Zurich shop with a long family history, a clear Meister range with published prices, and the option to spread the cost over up to 24 months. A couple from abroad can shortlist rings on the English site and visit at Bellevue on a weekday or Saturday.
It suits less well a couple who wants a one-off ring designed with a goldsmith, since the rings shown come from one maker, or a couple who needs a firm delivery date before ordering. Asking about lead times and engraving when making first contact settles both.
