A one-woman goldsmith's atelier in Thun

Goldschmiede Aeschlimann is a goldsmith's atelier at Bälliz 23 in Thun, run by Andrea Aeschlimann. The homepage headline sums up the offer: "In diesem Goldschmiede Atelier entstehen Ihre ganz persönlichen Eheringe, Schmuckstücke & Einzelanfertigungen", in this goldsmith's atelier your very personal wedding rings, jewelry and one-off pieces are made. Wedding rings (Eheringe) and engagement rings (Verlobungsringe) sit at the top of the menu, and the site is written throughout in her own voice.

For a couple, that means dealing directly with the person who makes the rings. The site is in German only and warm in tone, closer to a personal letter than a sales page, and it is clear about how to reach her and when.

The atelier and its history

On the "Über mich" (about me) page, Andrea Aeschlimann calls the atelier her second home, "kein Wunder nach mehr als 30 Jahren an diesem für mich so wichtigen Ort" (no wonder after more than 30 years at this place that matters so much to me). She took over the business in 2002. When she did, she chose not to change much in the workshop itself, and many of the old tools still remind her of her former master and close friend, Hans Schenkel.

The front of the shop is different. She describes the consultation and sales room as a small "Wohlfühl Oase", a feel-good oasis, furnished in a cozy, elegant country-house style. So a couple coming for a ring consultation sit in a comfortable room, with the working bench behind it.

She also writes that she loves giving free rein to her passion and creativity there, often in the evening after closing or on Sundays, with blues or Vivaldi's Four Seasons at full volume. It is a small detail, but it tells a couple that the rings are made in that same room by the person they met.

The same page has a short section on customer opinions (Kundenmeinungen) in which she writes that jewelry can carry many different emotions: happiness, grief, love, joy, laughter, tears, speechlessness. She says that customers letting her share in those feelings is something she regards as an immensely precious gift, and she thanks them for their trust. The page then links to the customer feedback page. On the homepage, she invites visitors to get to know the irresistible beauties of nature, naming pearls, gemstones, diamonds and precious metals, and says that staging them well is pure passion and joy for her.

What she makes for a wedding

The homepage opens with a series of questions that map out the offer. Do you dream of unique, handmade wedding rings? Would you like to surprise your partner with a handmade bracelet (Handbracelet)? Is a proposal coming up and you need the right engagement ring? Have you long wanted to turn old jewelry into something new? It goes on to mention meaningful gifts for a godchild, high-quality alterations, careful repairs of a favorite piece and expert advice.

For a wedding, the relevant parts are:

  • Wedding rings, made by hand in the atelier.
  • Engagement rings, listed separately in the menu.
  • Aus alt mach neu (make new from old): reworking existing jewelry. A couple with inherited gold or stones can ask whether these can go into their rings.
  • Einzelanfertigungen: one-off pieces made to order, such as jewelry for the day or gifts for witnesses.

The menu also has a separate page on Oekogold (eco gold). The homepage does not describe that option, so a couple who care about the origin of the gold should ask about it.

Finding the atelier

The contact page is unusually precise about how to find the shop:

  • Parking: in the City West, City Nord and Schlossberg multi-story car parks, a few minutes' walk from Bälliz, which the page calls the main shopping street.
  • Entrance: in Bälliz, between the Haarwerk hair salon and Zebra, opposite the Schaufelberger department store.
  • Floor: the shop is on the 2. Stock (the second floor as the site writes it).

The page does not mention the train station or buses. For guests arriving without a car, a map is the way to plan the walk.

Opening hours and appointments

The regular hours are short:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 09.00 to 12.00
  • Saturday: 10.00 to 16.00
  • Monday and Thursday: closed, reserved for workshop work (Atelierarbeit)

The homepage asks customers to book an appointment where possible, "Bitte wenn möglich mit Terminvereinbarung", and says that appointments outside opening hours are possible by arrangement. Inquiries are welcome at any time by e-mail at info@goldschmiedeaeschlimann.ch or by phone on 033 222 22 37 (+41 33 222 22 37 from abroad). There is also a message form on the homepage and the contact page.

The homepage also carries notices about irregular opening hours, with a News page for details. A couple traveling to Thun for a consultation should confirm the date by e-mail first.

What the site leaves open

  • Prices. The site publishes no prices for wedding or engagement rings; the menu links a shop, but the homepage gives no figures.
  • Lead time. There is no indication of how long a pair of handmade wedding rings takes.
  • Language. The site is in German only and does not say whether consultations are possible in English.
  • Working at a distance. Nothing is said about designing rings by e-mail with couples who live abroad, or about sending finished rings.
  • Metals for wedding rings. Beyond precious metals in general and the Oekogold page, the homepage names no specific metals or alloys.

Who it suits

Goldschmiede Aeschlimann suits couples who want their wedding rings made by one goldsmith in a small, personal setting, and who like the idea of sitting down with the maker in her own atelier. The reworking service makes it a good fit for couples with family jewelry, and the Kunden-Feedback page in the menu gives a sense of past customers.

It is a harder fit for couples who need to plan entirely from abroad or on a short timeline. The limited opening hours, the request for appointments and the German-only site mean the first step is an e-mail, well ahead of the wedding, to agree a date, a language and a realistic timeline for the rings.
