Sutter Uhren & Schmuck
Tap a star to rate
Sutter Uhren & Schmuck is a family-run jewelry and watch shop at Marktgasse 49 in the old town of Winterthur, where the goldsmith Adolf Sutter opened it in 1917. It carries a large selection of wedding rings, including Meister, does its own goldsmith work, and states in English on its site: "We speak English."
Wedding rings
The wedding ring page opens with "Wir führen eine grosse Auswahl an Eheringen" (we carry a large selection of wedding rings). The range includes, among others, the creations of the wedding ring specialist Meister, which the page describes as the leading wedding ring and jewelry manufacturer in Europe, based in Wollerau on Lake Zurich. The page adds that the grace of a fine ring in gold or platinum has to be experienced with all the senses, and invites couples to come in for a thorough consultation in the shop. The page links straight to Meister's own website, so a couple can browse the collection at home before choosing what to try on in Winterthur.
The site also has a separate engagement ring section (Verlobungsringe) in its menu. Beyond the Meister range, the services list includes custom pieces and goldsmith work (Anfertigungen/Goldschmiedearbeiten), engraving and pearl maintenance, so a couple who want something outside the catalog, or an inscription inside their rings, can discuss it on site.
GIA diamonds only
One point sets the shop's diamond policy apart. The ring page explains that the Gemological Institute of America is the world's largest and most renowned independent certification body for diamonds, and warns that other certifiers often test less rigorously. It calls the result "Dirty Overgrading": the selling price of the diamonds goes up, but not their quality. The shop's conclusion is plain: "Wir arbeiten ausschliesslich mit GIA-Zertifikaten" (we work exclusively with GIA certificates). For a couple buying an engagement stone, that is a clear standard to compare other offers against.
Recognition and ethics
The page says the shop's jewelry range is regularly recognized by a renowned German jewelry magazine, which counts it among the best in the trade as a «Top Juwelier mit exzellenter Schmuckkultur» (top jeweler with excellent jewelry culture). The page does not name the magazine or give a year. Sutter Uhren und Schmuck AG also commits to the official ethics code of the Swiss watch and jewelry industry, which is linked from every page.
A family business since 1917
The About page tells the history in a few lines. Adolf Sutter opened his shop for goldsmith work and watches at Marktgasse 49 "im Herzen der Winterthurer Altstadt" (in the heart of Winterthur's old town) in 1917. His son, Adolf Sutter junior, trained as a watchmaker, joined in spring 1939 and took over the business in 1954. A good 30 years later his daughter, Theresia Stierlin-Sutter, took over the day-to-day management, and in 2008 her son Beat Stierlin joined the management as the 4th generation. The shop celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017.
Services
The service page lists a wide range of work:
- sales of watches, jewelry and fine jewels;
- repairs and service for IWC Schaffhausen watches, as an official IWC partner;
- repairs and service for watches and jewelry of other brands;
- custom pieces and goldsmith work;
- purchase of old gold, as a federally registered and inspected precious metals dealer (the list gives a minimum of 10g);
- pearl maintenance;
- custom leather straps;
- engraving;
- buying and selling Goldvreneli (Swiss gold coins);
- valuations and expert opinions, including for insurers;
- anniversary and corporate gifts, and small series;
- Tax Free Shopping.
Most watch services, such as battery and strap changes, regulation and water-resistance tests, are done in-house and quickly. Full overhauls go to the manufacturer, which the shop says also refreshes the case and bracelet. The water-resistance test is free and takes about 5 minutes, and the shop recommends having it done every year before the summer holidays. The page explains why: water resistance is not a permanent property, since seals age naturally and a knock to the crown can affect it.
Old gold is bought for cash at the current gold price, and gemstones can be removed and returned on request. Pieces not made of gold or platinum are not bought. The old gold section names small amounts under 5g as the lower limit, while the services list says a minimum of 10g, so it is worth checking before bringing in a small piece. For a couple thinking of turning inherited gold into part of the budget for new rings, this service is on hand in the same shop, and the valuation service, which the list says includes work as a consultant for various insurers, is useful for insuring the finished rings.
For international customers
A box on each page, headed "International Customers", reads: "We speak English. We offer Tax Free Shopping. Major Credit Cards accepted. Bitcoin accepted." It answers the first two questions a couple from abroad usually has. There is also a WhatsApp chat link.
Hours and contact
The shop is open Tuesday to Friday 09:15 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 18:30, and Saturday 09:15 to 16:00. It is closed on Sunday and Monday, since the published hours cover only Tuesday to Saturday. The site also posts occasional special hours, such as a shortened "Albani-Samstag" Saturday. What the site leaves open
- Prices. No prices are published for wedding rings or custom work.
- Lead times. The site does not say how long a Meister ring or a custom piece takes.
- Appointments. The ring page invites couples in for a consultation but does not say whether it should be booked ahead.
- Getting there. Beyond the old-town address, the site gives no directions, parking or public transport details.
- The site itself is in German apart from the international customers box.
Who it suits
Sutter suits couples who want to buy wedding rings, and perhaps an engagement diamond, from an old family shop that states its standards clearly: Meister rings in gold or platinum, GIA certificates only, and a signed ethics code. The English statement, tax-free shopping and card and Bitcoin payment make it practical for couples from abroad, and the IWC partnership suits couples who want a watch as a wedding gift.
It is less suited to couples who want to see prices before visiting, or who cannot come to Winterthur between Tuesday and Saturday.
